It is determined that clinging is the characteristic of valid cognition. Secondly, it eliminates the impossible. Thirdly, it eliminates being too extensive, and supplements what is not pervasive. Some say that realizing the truth is the function of valid cognition, but not its characteristic. The followers of Brahmanism believe that realizing the truth possesses three qualities: for something not previously realized, to eliminate superimposition with an unerring mode of apprehension. This also possesses three distinctions: the distinction of the entity is merely eliminating superimposition related to the wrong direction, but not that valid cognition actually eliminates superimposition. The distinction of the object is something not previously realized. The distinction of the mode of apprehension is not being mistaken about the object. They elaborately proclaim that these three distinctions also have three functions. If we refute the unreasonable parts of these views, first, it is unreasonable because the signified valid cognition is also a dharma. It would become two, because if it is determined by two selective characteristics, it is for that reason. The decorative statement is also unreasonable, if the characteristic and the signified are divided into two and it is thought that all four are established, it is also unreasonable. If asked what the common characteristic is, saying that the respective characteristics are this is irrelevant. Or, when asked what the general characteristic of valid cognition is, if valid cognition is divided into direct perception and inference and the characteristic is established, then there will be no fault. Furthermore, the signified 'valid cognition' will become impossible, because there is no common characteristic. The statement that Dharmakirti's view is to supplement the way of eliminating the non-pervasive from elsewhere is unreasonable, because if the words of the established characteristic have the ability to eliminate the non-pervasive, then supplementing from elsewhere is meaningless, and if it does not have this ability, then the previous words will become flawed. Distinguishing realizing the truth as the function of valid cognition rather than its characteristic does not accord with the intention of the scriptures, because the scriptures say, "Existing in the ability to perform a function." etc., and "One's own characteristic is uncertain." Therefore, the view of the Brahmins that realizing the truth possesses three qualities is the characteristic of valid cognition is unreasonable, because if so, there will be the three faults of being unnecessary, non-pervasive, and impossible. That is, if the distinction of the object is established as something not previously realized, and it is viewed from the perspective of excluding different categories, then it is unnecessary, because there is no complete exclusion, i.e., clinging to the object.

If it is not mistaken, then it will certainly not fall into the state of having already realized, because this is a universal rule. Because this (referring to valid cognition) has already stated that the consciousness of cutting off falls into the state of having already realized, it is clear that this refers to the function of excluding dissimilar categories. The difference in essence does not universally apply to direct perception, because it does not cut off superimposition and bondage. If the "meaning" of realizing the true meaning is understood as realizing as it is, then it is impossible, because direct perception only regards the cognition similar to things as realization, and although inference based on the sign of the result claims to have grasped the cause of smoke—fire, it has only grasped fire. Secondly, the knowledge that does not deceive is the characteristic of valid cognition, which is the view of the Sutra school. Because in the Sutra school, in the chapter on determining the number of valid cognitions, it has been stated that the knowledge that does not deceive belongs to the category of definite number, and the knowledge that deceives does not belong to that category. And, in the chapter on direct perception, based on non-conceptual knowledge, the knowledge that does not deceive is correct direct perception, and the knowledge that deceives is not like that. Here, the view of Rigter is unparalleled. The teacher Dignāga said in some parts of the treatise that it is non-deceptive, and in other parts that it is the manifestation of unknown meaning. Dharmakīrti considered these two to be the same view, believing that the mind does not deceive that thing. He said, "In some parts of the treatise," the power of this sentence indicates that the characteristic of valid cognition is also explained in the complete treatise, and the words "these two" etc. prove through the above method that there are two characteristics. These two explanations are also clear in Dignāga's treatise, because Dharmakīrti said, "Considering these two to be the same view." These two explanations of Dharmakīrti regard Dignāga's view as the same, therefore in this commentary, the complete parts of the valid cognition treatise are considered to be the knowledge of non-deception that is explained individually, because this is the time to explain the main meaning of the Sutra school. This proves that the characteristic explained in other treatises other than the complete treatise and some parts of the treatise is also the knowledge of non-deception, because there is a saying that "it is considered to be non-deception," this is my good saying. The knowledge of the manifestation of unknown meaning is the characteristic of valid cognition, the
