Yes, just as distinctions are made through sound, they are also made through meaning, thus not exceeding the three faults of definitions. The teacher, during the section on distinguishing definitions, said, "The sound of the essence of the word itself," and so forth, thus preventing over-pervasiveness; "The sound of desire eliminates non-pervasiveness," thus preventing non-pervasiveness; "The definition of the side accepted as the object to be proven," and so forth, intends to prevent impossibility. Each of those three faulty ones has two each of definition and distinction, which can be known from the self-commentary. Third, refuting arguments: If these faults of definition are considered based on whether an example is set or not set, which is it? If it is the first case, then setting the definition of a cow as a speckled tail will not become non-pervasive, because if set for a white cow, there is no fault, and if set for a black cow, it will become impossible. If it is the second case, then all faults of the example will become unreasonable, because even setting the definition of merely a living being as a cow, setting a cow's tail is completely without fault. Also, for the basis of an impossible definition, does the object to be defined exclude or not exclude? If it is the latter, then the definition will not pervade the object to be defined. If it is the former, then when setting a cow as having a cow's tail, when setting the tail, then that cow is excluded, because that cow and the tail are not different, therefore it is impossible. Such two arguments of analysis do not harm this occasion of considering faults and merits, because all faults are considered based on setting an example. However, when setting a white cow as a cow, setting a speckled tail is non-pervasive, because at that time the white cow is merely an example, and the object to be defined is a cow. Therefore, if not set, then the definition of a cow, a cow's tail, is not without fault, just as smoke is the fruit of fire, but if set outside the topic of debate, it cannot become expressive, similarly, a cow's tail is the definition of a cow, but if the example is set as a horse, etc., it cannot define, therefore it is faulty. Also, for the definition of impossible, even if the object to be defined is excluded, the impossibility of the tail is not established, because a speckled tail is impossible. It is accepted that a white cow becomes impossible. Second, for the object to be defined, there are three: negation, establishment, and abandonment. The first is: Some, namely the coarse black ones, say: Definition and the defined are one entity, because they are different.

Some say that the establishment of a term is because it is a sign of its own nature. The definition of a term is that it is an object of attachment where sound and mind do not confuse the distinction of meaning, and it is considered to be the basis of what is indicated. This is not reasonable, because the definition would become a conceptual sense consciousness that sees hidden things, because what is indicated, distinguished by name, is the mind that holds the term 'cow'. The thesis is accepted. The pervasion is that the name and what is indicated are the same thing, and one thing cannot have two aspects of appearing and not appearing. If it is free from conceptuality, and does not hold the name, then it holds the definition. Since it does not hold what is indicated, it loses the characteristic of being the same thing. Furthermore, establishing a white buffalo through hidden things becomes establishing meaning, not establishing a term, because they are the same thing. For example, like establishing impermanence through being made. Moreover, not only that, but the application of the term 'cow' that agrees in meaning would become existent, because the definition is existent and is the same thing. Furthermore, taking the basis of what is indicated as the term is not the intention, because at the time of convention, the convention of what is indicated is determined by taking the definition as the reason, and later, at the time of the term, by seeing the definition, the convention is remembered, and one thinks in the mind, 'This is a tree,' and speaks the word 'tree,' and the body engages in taking the tree, etc., these are said to be terms, because it is said in the sutra, 'Following the famous convention.' Secondly, the sound of knowledge with reason is the definition of what is indicated, and its basis is the reason, that is, the convention applied to the distinction of meaning. Having understood it as explained before, the terms of the three doors are taking and abandoning the cows of oneself and others, saying 'is' or 'is not,' judging 'exists' or 'does not exist,' and so on. Accomplishing worldly affairs through such means is establishing terms. The self-character of sound, the generality of sound, and merely the name that is actually named are not what is indicated, because all the sounds of names such as Devadatta would become that. Merely being able to be imputed is also not, because that exists in all knowables. Therefore, the sound of a kind relies on the distinction of meaning, and the common name with reason is what is indicated, therefore it is imputedly existent, and it is a superimposition, because it is not established on the object. Thirdly, if the name and what is indicated are not the same thing, then establishing what is indicated through the definition is a sign of its own nature.
