Or, darkness, smoke, and sandalwood fire become cause and effect. Because they subsequently change. If you think so, that's too much. It is not so, because here darkness is seen as the manifestation of the changing form of trees, and it changes like it. When the sandalwood fire goes out, the smoke does not disappear. Therefore, this will not cause damage either. The third part is divided into two points: non-cause cannot produce, and if it produces, the previous and subsequent cause and effect are established. The first point is to refute the idea that it will produce. The refutation is divided into two points: refuting the unreasonable points. The first point is: becoming cause and effect does not require disappearance, because it is seen that smoke arises from the top of Indra's head, etc. If you think so, then whatever dharma is not smoke is not the fruit of that fire. Because whatever is not the fruit of fire arises from the top of Indra's head. Therefore, the moss that grows from an anthill like Indra's head is not smoke, because it is mistaken for smoke because it resembles smoke, it is only given the name of smoke. The second point is: if what is not produced by a cause is not its fruit, then the fire produced by striking a stone is not fire, because it is not produced from firewood. If you do not admit pervasiveness, then the moss on Indra's head is similar to smoke even though it is not produced from fire. The answer is: not similar, if it is true that stones and wood, etc., are considered the proximate cause of fire, but that is not the case. The proximate cause of fire is the fire particles themselves. As it is said in the sutra: The collection is established, the cause is the one with the collection. Stones and wood, etc., are the supporting conditions for gathering fire particles, but they are not the proximate cause. For example, the proximate cause of eye consciousness is the previous moment of consciousness, and the empowering condition is the sense faculty. We believe that all matter is a collection of eight particles, not a single, independent, coarse substance, so there are also fire particles in stones and wood. Therefore, what is not fire cannot be the proximate cause of fire, and what is not consciousness cannot be the proximate cause of consciousness. The second point is: or, the previous and subsequent proximate cause and effect are different, because the fruit produced by fire and smoke

Just as there are different kinds of smoke, the cause of the first smoke is fire, and the cause of the later smoke is smoke, and so on. Second, in identifying characteristics, there are three aspects: refutation, establishment, and abandonment. First, according to the Tibetan view that relations exist in meaning, characteristics must be regarded as self-characteristics. If this is accepted, then self-characteristics do not mutually follow each other, because it has already been said that they are not comprehensible. Some argue that it is unreasonable to regard smoke and "made" etc. as characteristics related to the meaning of words, because by relating to the non-substantial meaning of words, self-characteristics cannot be understood. Second, it is precisely the exclusion by conceptualization, which mistakenly takes the meaning of words as self-characteristics, that grasps the negations of smoke, fire, "made," impermanence, etc., as one. At that time, the comprehensible is concomitant. It is said. Third, if it is argued that the negation is one, then there is the fault of being the same as the universal of substance and conceptualization. If so, because the negation is non-substantial, it has already been explained in the context of dispelling the faults of one and many. Third, by what means are these ascertained? That one part is ascertained is the view of others; that both are necessary is one's own view; and abandoning what is unreasonable in that. The first part has two aspects. First, ascertainment through analysis: The Kashmiri Bhavyakirti says, "Although the temporary relation is ascertained by valid cognition, the essential relation is ascertained by analysis." It is said that those below believe that only valid cognition ascertains the relation. For example, universality is established by the valid cognition that grasps the characteristic of the sign and the two valid cognitions that prevent it from being on the dissimilar side, thus establishing concomitance and reversal. Second, one's own view is that analysis that does not rely on valid cognition is also uncertain because there is a possibility of reversed exclusion. If direct perception is also uncertain, then the terms of entering and returning will not be established. If it is certain, then it does not go beyond conceptual analysis. Even if the dissimilar side is excluded by inference, without conceptual analysis, the similar side and the relation will not be established. Therefore, the certainty generated by the power of valid cognition is the ascertainment of the object from the aspect of excluding others, that is, the relation of conceptual analysis. Furthermore, because mistaken conceptualization grasps both the meaning of words and the self-characteristic of things as one, one will enter into self-characteristics. Due to error, one understands as if it were one thing.
