If one explains the independent (non-dependent) reasoning of harm, it is not the intention of the teacher (Dignāga). Because it is not the teacher's intention, therefore, to counter the two wrong conceptions of some non-Buddhists who believe that things perish when they encounter destruction and do not perish when they do not encounter it, and that some things such as Īśvara and the Vedas never perish, the two types of independent and harmful reasons are explained in order. For the former, if one admits destruction, then it establishes that it destroys itself by its own nature without depending on other causes; for the latter, it refutes by examining whether the indestructible thing can function or not. Therefore, the harmful reason does not apply to those who admit destruction; the independent reason does not apply to those who admit non-destruction, because the objects are different. Second, there are three ways to determine the relationship arising from this: refuting others' views, establishing one's own views, and settling disputes. First, the translator says: It is determined by observing the cause and effect simultaneously with five kinds of direct perception: first, neither cause nor effect is observed, then the cause is observed, then the effect is observed, then the cause disappears, so the cause is not observed, then the effect disappears, so the effect is not observed, and thus it is determined. It cannot be determined by this alone, because temporary concomitance and cessation also exist in the sound of drums and sunlight, so it is too much to consider them as cause and effect. If it is determined by the concomitance and cessation of nature, then it is reduced to three, so this statement is completely unreasonable. Some people say that it is determined by three kinds of valid cognition: seeing both cause and effect simultaneously, then not seeing the cause, and then not seeing the effect. It is unreasonable, because it is impossible to see both cause and effect at the same time, and if they are seen alternately, then there will be two times of seeing and two times of not seeing, a total of four times. Second, there are three types: the general definition of cause and effect, the valid cognition that determines it, and the cessation of disputes about them. First, the definition of cause is that which can benefit, and the definition of effect is that which can be benefited. There are also two types of cause: the proximate cause mainly benefits the nature of the effect, and the co-occurring auxiliary condition mainly benefits the distinction of the effect. Therefore, the definition of a seed is also that it can produce an effect when it encounters conditions. Second, the method of determining the relationship of arising from it is also concomitance.

Through the ways of concomitance and contraposition, it is necessary to determine the two forms of the three instances. Among them, the special feature of the three instances of unobserved antecedents is that, first, in a clean place, both smoke and fire are possible to appear but are not observed. When fire is seen, the exclusion of others by fire is grasped through conception. Then, after seeing the smoke, the exclusion of others by smoke is grasped through conception, and with a conceptual awareness, it is determined that this smoke now would not arise without the previous fire. In addition, the three instances of observed antecedents are: first, seeing the arising of smoke; then, not seeing the cause of production; and then, not seeing the produced effect, these three. This is uncertain about the prior limit, while the former applies to not knowing the posterior limit. As stated in the Pramāṇaviniścaya: "If one sees what was unseen, one sees; if one does not see it, one does not see. Even without a demonstrator, one knows that it is the nature of the fruit." What is said is that, considering both concomitance and contraposition, when determining the two limits, after the former is determined, the latter must also be determined. For things like mind and trees, or objects and consciousness, which cannot be determined by the three instances, they are determined by determining the exclusion of others. Whatever lineage is established, there is no difference, just like fire and wood. Thus, previously unobserved, it prevents arising from other causes, and the contraposition of the effect is established. The two instances of previously not existing and later arising being observed prevent eternal non-arising and arising from no cause, and the concomitance of the effect is established, thereby preventing the three limits of the cause. The characteristic of the effect is that both concomitance and contraposition are established, so it is established through the three instances of concomitance, and similarly through the three instances of contraposition. The third is divided into two, the first is: as a characteristic that must be determined as cause and effect, previously unobserved, therefore the contraposition of the effect cannot be established, because the effect may not be able to be seen. Merely seeing the production does not prevent other causes, because the cause may not be able to be seen. For example, for happiness and suffering, karma or disease produces, and for survival, demons and gods are like that. If it is said that for fire and smoke etc. that cannot appear, such doubts cannot be prevented, but here we are establishing fire and smoke that are not naturally seized as cause and effect, so there is no harm. The second is the case of being too extreme: the morphological changes of tree trunks and
