It is not possible, because the self-characteristic of things being determined by place, time, and form is limitless. Moreover, there is no need to actually combine symbols through seeing with the eyes and touching with the body. Later, when naming, it is difficult to find the self-characteristic of the initial symbol period, because that self-characteristic is absent, because place, time, and form are mixed up. Regarding this, it is said: Sounds are all used to indicate symbols. Also, past and future pots should not be the objects of expression of sound, because both do not have self-characteristics. Regarding this, it is said: If it is related to things. Furthermore, if sound directly expresses the self-nature of things, then eye faculty, appearance, and attention, etc., would be unnecessary, because by expression alone, the self-characteristic of things is directly understood. Regarding this, it is said: There is no function of the senses. Furthermore, it is impossible for sensory consciousness to grasp the relationship between the expresser and the expressed, because there is no relationship between the two in the thing itself. Also, when connecting "the name of this thing is this," it is a wisdom that excludes others, because it is a discriminating wisdom. Regarding this, it is said: This and this are related. Also, when initially establishing the connection between symbol and thing, whether or not one shows one's own characteristics, the symbol is used for the general, because later the purpose of naming is to attach symbols in order to understand the meaning of things, and the self-characteristic of the symbol period does not exist in the naming period. Regarding this, it is said: For the eye, things appear. Also, even if there is no symbolic connection between "bloated belly" and "pot," merely seeing "bloated belly" will immediately be understood as "pot," because sensory consciousness grasps the thing mixed with sound. Regarding this, it is said: It is not without having established a connection. If sound and thing are not mixed, then the mind consciousness that follows the gate of the senses, seeing the pot and combining "pot" as a symbol, both arise uninterruptedly in a mixed manner, which is conceptual thought, however, it is manifest like non-conceptual thought. Otherwise, understanding or determining things is impossible, because seeing things and conceptual thought both only operate on different objects. Therefore, seeing

Because it is established through experiencing certainty, seeing is conceptual thought, isn't it? The answer to this is: there is the way of consciousness entering simultaneously and the way of entering gradually. The first is: for the two minds of conceptual and non-conceptual, foolish people cling to them as one, there is a reason for confusion, because they enter the same object and enter at the same time. The second is: also as you say, for these two, foolish people also have a reason to cling to them as one, because they gradually enter the object, but the entry is rapid. To this, it is also said, "The mind with concept and without concept," and so on. The second is: even if you don't label the object, do you label the self-character of knowledge? It is not permissible to directly label the self-character of knowledge, because it is the same as the faults established in considering the object's self-character as what is expressed, because they are the same in their own nature. The second is, for considering the universal as what is expressed, there are two obstructions: the object's universal and the sound-meaning's universal being considered as what is expressed. The first is: the Vaisheshika says, if you label the self-character, although there is that fault, the sound does not reveal the self-character, but expresses other kinds of universal meaning, so there are none of the above faults, is it? That is also unreasonable, because there is no other universal meaning in that manifestation, and even if there is, even if you label the universal that does not manifest and cannot function, there is no need, because it is not related to the things that manifest, so it cannot be understood, and if the universal is a real thing, like the self-character, it has no ability to label. If you do not label the single universal, but label the self-character related to the universal, thereby understanding the self-character, then if you label the self-character itself, you do not need the universal, and if you do not label it, even if you label the universal, it has no ability to understand the self-character, just like asking a guide about a tree stump, for the universal that has no necessity and ability, directly label your own nature! If self-characters are infinite, so you cannot directly label them, then this self-character related to the universal also cannot be directly labeled, because it is the same as being infinite. The second is: the expressed content of the object-knowing self-character and the universal real object existing in the object.
