So, if your refutation or other-exclusion is real, then it has the same faults as the general real. If it is non-real, then there is nothing, so it is unnecessary and ineffective to express it. Therefore, refutation does not need to be the object of sound. The answer to this is: refuting the answers of others, and explaining one's own answers, there are two kinds. The first is: regarding the analysis of whether refutation is established as real, most Tibetans believe that: the refutation of the real, that is, the refutation from the non-real, exists as real, because it is inseparable and one with the real. This is unreasonable, if so, then the fault spoken to the general realists will inevitably fall on oneself. How is it? That which is refuted from non-tree, if it is real, then it must be a tree, so is it the same entity or different entities as Shapa (a tree name)? If it is the same entity, then other sandalwood and so on will become non-trees, because the nature of that tree, refuted from non-tree, is not other than Shapa, that is, the entity of Shapa. If, like the second case, the entity other than Shapa is a tree, then Shapa will become a non-tree, because the nature of that tree, refuted from non-tree, is not other than sandalwood, but the entity of sandalwood. Just like a piece of stone. Moreover, because of that itself, this is not ultimate. And so on. Therefore, taking the treatises of Dharmakirti, to refute the reasoning of the great master of self-mastery's refutation of non-reality, is like monkeys living in the forest scattering unclean things on the branches of trees, this is a transitional phrase expressed in verses. Second, one's own answer is: for other-exclusion, there is no fault in analyzing whether the general and the particular are the same or different, because other-exclusion or refutation is not established as real. When analyzing the way in which conceptual thoughts enter, for all manifest realities, there is a refutation from that which is not it. For example, just as people's colors are different, but the color of the shadow appears to be the same. Moreover, refutation has no self-nature. And so on. All sounds enter through exclusion, therefore, even if one utters the sound "tree", it has two abilities to negate non-tree and establish tree, but there are no other two action meanings. Moreover, in the half of the fourth part it says: Therefore, other than that sound, there is no refutation and expression of one's own meaning and two actions. Then two abilities

If someone asks, then, wouldn't that (sound) become an agent, actually performing the two sounds of showing the opposite and returning, by taking that (sound) as the real agent? It would not become an agent, because it is impossible for the two dharmas of opposite and returning to be one entity, and because returning has not established an entity. Therefore, (some) say that because of confusing the mind-dharma and the meaning-dharma, the very sound that expresses returning can establish the opposite thing, that is, understanding, (they) say, it is also not performing two sounds. (They) say so. Fifth, the Vaiśeṣika says, if there is no common entity that connects the various distinct appearances to one basis, then blue lotuses, etc., will have no common basis, because the different dharmas of lotus and blue, etc., will not gather on one basis. If someone asks this, although there is no blue other than the lotus in meaning, in the view of conceptualization, blue and lotus will actually become a common basis, because in the view of exclusion, the sounds of blue, etc., that distinguish non-blue do not exclude the lotus, so the returning of blue is distinguished on the lotus, and the lotus is summarized as one dharma-possessor that serves as the basis of blue and appears. That common basis is not the object of sensory consciousness, because that is a fabrication, and sensory consciousness only engages with self-characteristics. On this, (it) is also said, at that time it is done in the view of the mind. They say so. Second, summarizing the meaning through narrating the greatness of wisdom is: the logician who has a very clear intelligence like an eye, with a pure object of understanding establishment and excluding others, is similar to an omniscient one in seeing the reality of knowable things. This is an intermediate verse. This is the explanation of the fourth chapter of the investigation of establishment and excluding others from the Treasury of Logic. Third, regarding the way of understanding what is said and what can be said, it is divided into two parts: elaborating the classification and summarizing the meaning by showing non-deception. The first part is divided into three: negation, establishment, and abandonment. The first is further divided into asserting the self-characteristic as what is to be said and refuting the assertion of the common characteristic as what is to be said. The first is further divided into two: external objects and asserting the self-characteristic of consciousness as what is to be said. The first is, some grammarians, etc., say that pots, etc., are the real self-characteristic of things to be said, because when saying "bring the pot," that thing that does the work of drawing water is taken. They say that the self-characteristic and the expression are truly combined.
