and, the purification of the land, and grasping the land through the arrangement of postures, etc., and protecting the land in order to prevent demons from entering. Among these, for temples, etc., where the land ritual has been done well before, or the old house of another teacher's mandala, or one's own old house of the mandala, etc., it is said that there is no need to perform any land ritual. If possible, it is good to do only the arrangement of postures and the protection of the land. Furthermore, the Secret General Tantra says: "The abode of the sage and the sleeping place of the cow, The cave and the top of the mountain, Any land that is solid, The roof and the stone slab, Beside the stupa and the island of flowing water, And on the shores of the lakes, There is no need to purify and examine the land, Nor is there a need to diligently perform it. There is no need to pull out thorns there, Even if you destroy the solid place, you don't need to. The faults of high and low, etc., There is no need to create doubts there." Therefore, the two, examination and purification, are not necessary, but the other rituals should be done. For lands that are not like that, all the rituals should be done completely. Among these, there are six types of examination rituals: examining from the direction, examining with earth, examining with the signs of the land, examining with the presence or absence of thorns, examining with the wealth of the vicinity, and examining from the color. The first is: the northeast direction of the city, leaning towards the east and north, with the middle being high is good. The General Tantra says: "Leaning towards the east and north, the land is auspicious for all activities." The Excellent Acquisition says: "The land leaning towards the east and north, the four corners are white." The Jewel Flame says: "The east and north are low, white, etc., square, etc." The Barley Ear says: "If it leans towards the east and north, it will become the accomplishment of the yogis. If the middle is high, one will obtain the land of the lineage holder of the Great Seal. If the north is high, one will follow the dakinis. If the east is high, it will exhaust the realization of the four and five lineages, etc. If the middle of the land is low, the mantra practitioner will become fearful." The second is: dig a hole there about the depth of a knee, fill it with the earth from there, and if there is excess, it is good, otherwise it should be abandoned. The General Tantra says: "First, the knee

Dig a small pit and fill it with the same soil. If there is any excess, then there will be accomplishment. If it is the opposite, the practitioner should not start the work. As it says in the "Auspiciously Held" (Bhadrakalpikasūtra): "Having dug it out, fill it with it, and there is excess." And in the "Jewel Flame" (Ratnolka): "Having dug it out, fill it again, and there is excess." Thirdly: Dig half a cubit (about 25 centimeters) deep, then tamp it down firmly, fill it with water, walk a hundred steps and return quickly. If it remains the same as before, that is good. As it says in the "General Tantra" (Samanyatantra): "Dig half a cubit deep and fill it with water. Walk a hundred steps. Return quickly and observe. If it remains the same, it is especially praised." Fourthly: The absence of thorns such as bones and ashes is praiseworthy. As it says in the "General Tantra" (Samanyatantra): "Uneven ground, with thorns, with fragments of tiles, with cliffs, with bones, with stumps, with holes, with pits, with ashes, with hot spots, with gravel, with dust, with stones, with hair, with insects, with pits, with beetles, and many others. Such a ground, the wise should avoid all works." And in the "Auspiciously Held" (Bhadrakalpikasūtra): "Bones, ashes, thorns, stones, defiled by excrement, go elsewhere. Udumbara (उदुम्बर, udumbara, cluster fig), Nyagrodha (न्यग्रोध, nyagrodha, banyan tree), Ashvattha (अश्वत्थ, aśvattha, peepal tree), Palasha (पलाश, palāśa, butea monosperma), Bakula (बकुल, bakula, mimusops elengi) and Arjuna (अर्जुन, arjuna, terminalia arjuna), possessing these characteristics, land that is like the back of a tortoise, these six should be avoided." These six, some explain as the previous four, plus trees as five, plus bones as six, but the view of the "Jewel Flame" (Ratnolka) is that the six lands that are like the back of a tortoise, possessing any of these six trees, seem to be the view. Because it says: "Udumbara, Nyagrodha, Ashvattha and Palasha, Bakula and Arjuna, these like the back of a tortoise should be avoided." Fifthly: It is praiseworthy to have many trees with water, flowers, fruits and leaves nearby, and for the river to flow to the right. As it says in the "General Tantra" (Samanyatantra): "Wherever there is plenty of water around the mandala ground, that is auspicious and one will attain accomplishment. Where water is scarce, the wise will criticize. Various kinds of trees are all around, with flowers, fruits and leaves, and where there are milk-producing trees, it is very auspicious for the mandala." And in the "Auspiciously Held" (Bhadrakalpikasūtra): "Water flows to the right." The "Jewel Flame" (Ratnolka) also says the same. Sixthly: The "General Tantra" (Samanyatantra).
