Practicing by mixing it with the wisdom of the example that is a symbol is a very special way of practicing. For obtaining the highest empowerment, practicing this will at some point give rise to the non-conceptual wisdom of the symbolic example, and practicing that will quickly lead to the wisdom of the meaning of the symbol. As for the practice of the pāramitās, it is impossible for the mind to become non-conceptual until the path of seeing arises, so the difference is very great. So, what is the meaning of the ālaya as the cause? In many sutras, such as the Ornament of Perfect Enlightenment and the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra, the "ālaya-vijñāna" is mentioned many times. Regarding its meaning, the Mind-Only school believes that it is a truly existent consciousness that is different from the seven consciousnesses, it is the basis for truly existent karmic imprints, it is the cause of all defiled and purified dharmas, the seed aspect recedes from the Śrāvaka Arhat, but the aspect of ripening continues uninterrupted until the Buddha-ground. However, the view of the Lord of Yoga is that mind, experience, and awareness are not differentiated, it does not fall into any sect or direction, skillful means and wisdom are clear and unceasing, and its essence is emptiness, which is what is indicated by the term "ālaya." Its meaning is that from beginningless time to the Buddha-ground, this mere clarity of mind that is uninterrupted, due to temporary conditions, transforms into virtue and non-virtue, as well as the seven consciousnesses and many mental factors, but it is not established from these perspectives, but rather from the perspective of uninterrupted clarity, therefore it does not fall into any sect or direction. From sentient beings to the Buddha-ground, clarity exists uninterruptedly, therefore skillful means and wisdom are clear and unceasing. If we examine its essence, it is empty of the four extremes of elaboration, therefore its essence is emptiness. Therefore, the Mind-Only school believes that because it truly exists, it can serve as the basis for saṃsāra and nirvāṇa. But here: Whatever emptiness can establish, Everything is established therein. Whatever emptiness cannot establish, Nothing is established therein. In this way, it is explained that the agent and the object can be performed by reason of being empty of truth, which is the difference. Nāgārjuna and his son also hold the same view. In the Commentary on the Bodhicitta, it says: For example, when a magnet is seen, iron quickly

It moves and shakes. Although there is no mind in this, it appears as if there is a mind. Likewise, the Alaya-vijñana, without mind, is like having a mind. Going and coming, it moves and constantly takes the three existences. For example, from the edge of the ocean, waves are sure to move. Likewise, the Alaya-vijñana moves by relying on the body. Thus, the Alaya was spoken of, and Chandrakirti said in the commentary on the Entering Path: Since the nature of all things follows it, it should be understood that only emptiness is shown by the name of Alaya-vijñana. Not only is there Alaya-vijñana, but there is also a person, because he shows that there is this to those who are to be tamed, so he takes them in. Thus it was said. In the chapter on the "Base," because the Alaya is acknowledged, it is said to be the Mind-Only school, and the Madhyamaka-Prasangika school does not even acknowledge the term Alaya. These statements do not distinguish between the context of the scriptures and the differences between the tenets. The Supreme Lord said that this and the sound meaning of Dharmadhatu are the same. Dharma refers to the aggregates, elements, and sources of samsara, and the powers of nirvana, and so on. Dhatu (藏文,དབྱིངས་,梵文天城体,dhatu,梵文罗马拟音,dhatu,汉语字面意思,界) means cause. Just as a seed is the cause of a sprout, it is not the cause of growth, but the cause of self-existing accomplishment, so it is translated as Dhatu. If it is not grasped by skillful means, it becomes the cause of the Dharma of samsara. If it is grasped by skillful means, it becomes the cause of the Dharma of nirvana, as stated in the Vow Sutra. However, establishing it as Alaya is mainly from the aspect of clarity, and establishing it as Dharmadhatu is mainly from the aspect of emptiness, but there is no difference in the nature of union. Establishing it as cause and continuity, etc., should be understood as in the small text of Alaya. The fourth is, samsara and nirvana are inseparable, samsara is all the dharmas included in conventional truth, and nirvana is the dharmata of these dharmas, and inseparability is union. Thus it is said, in the fourth chapter of the Root Tantra Subsequent: This is called samsara, this is the nature of nirvana. After abandoning samsara, in another place, nirvana cannot be realized. Samsara is form, sound, etc., samsara is feeling, etc., samsara is the senses.
