Regarding the appearance of experience: The scriptures say, "Yogis have the appearance of experience in samadhi." This is divided into two types: common yogis continuously cultivate common experiences in their continuum; uncommon yogis continuously cultivate the definite understanding of experiences that will arise in their continuum. Among the first, a yogi is an individual who practices the Paramita Vehicle. Samadhi is the wisdom of cultivating loving-kindness, compassion, and bodhicitta. The appearance of experience is that these experiences arise truthfully in the continuum, appearing as equality of self and others or cherishing others more than oneself. This has three aspects: cultivating loving-kindness, cultivating compassion, and cultivating bodhicitta. The first has three aspects: cultivating loving-kindness towards close ones, cultivating loving-kindness towards enemies, and mixing all of these together. The first is cultivating loving-kindness towards one's mother, then mixing it with relatives, and then mixing it with other ordinary people. The method of cultivating these is: thinking that this mother has been very kind, may she have happiness and the cause of happiness. The second is the same, all relatives have been one's mother. The third, enemies and ordinary people have all been one's mother, so think that all sentient beings are my mothers. Cultivating compassion has three aspects: for sentient beings who are afflicted by suffering, generating compassion focused on sentient beings, wishing them to be free from suffering and the cause of suffering; since the cause of suffering also arises from ignorance, wanting them to be free from ignorance is compassion focused on phenomena; and although all sentient beings are not truly established by nature, wanting them to be free from clinging to sentient beings is objectless compassion. Cultivating bodhicitta also has three aspects: aspirational bodhicitta, engaging bodhicitta, and ultimate bodhicitta. The first has three aspects: thinking that for the benefit of all sentient beings, I will attain the state of perfect and complete enlightenment; thinking that I will place all sentient beings in the state of nirvana through the gate of the three vehicles; and thinking that all three types of individuals will gradually train and place all sentient beings, equal to the extent of space, in the state of Buddhahood. Engaging bodhicitta
