Someone was walking around, thinking: Is this Tilopa? Others said it was Naropa. Sometimes they saw him doing strange things, like a madman, and thought: This is not Tilopa. But he said: No, no. Naropa knew he had clairvoyance and followed him. A man pierced a yogi's cloth upper garment with an iron hook and offered it to him. He took out the hook and inserted it into Naropa's secret place, then disappeared. Naropa's secret place swelled up, and he could not walk. He came again and asked: Are you uncomfortable? Naropa replied: It hurts. He took out the hook, touched it with his hand, and said: You are not sick. Naropa was freed from the pain. Again, he continued to follow him, and on the road, he saw the king and queen with their entourage. The teacher said: Is there anyone brave enough to scratch the queen's face? Naropa put on Brahmin clothes, went forward, and scratched the queen's face, and was beaten by the entourage. At this time, the teacher came and asked: Are you uncomfortable? And so on, as before. Again, a minister's wife came with her entourage. The teacher asked: Is there anyone who can kiss her? And so on, as before. Again, he continued to follow him, and in a city, people were celebrating. Naropa took some vegetables and offered them to the teacher. The teacher ate them and said: Very delicious. Naropa thought: I can eat a little more. So he went to ask for more, but they didn't give it to him. He ran to a house, took a copper pot that looked like the previous vegetables, covered his chest, and ran away, and was beaten by many people, but the copper pot did not fall off. People said: Greedy guy, you took the vegetables, give us back the copper pot. He returned the copper pot, hid the vegetables in the leaves, and offered them to the teacher, who was very happy and ate them. Again, he continued to follow him and came to the top of the three-story monastery of the monks. The teacher asked: Is there anyone brave enough to jump down from here? Naropa jumped down, and the teacher did not come for a few days. Naropa was very painful, and the teacher came and asked: Are you in pain? And so on, saying these words, Naropa was freed from the pain, as before. Again, he continued to follow him and came to a forest where many trees were lit on fire, and the teacher asked: Is there anyone brave

He said, "Who can put their hand in here?" When Naropa put his hand in, it turned into a blister, but the illness was healed as before. Again, following as before, they arrived at an empty plain, and after staying together for a while, (Tilopa) said, "Here, you don't care about heat or cold for a long time, striving for what is difficult, what do you want?" (Naropa) replied, "I want the true instructions." (Tilopa) said, "Then, offer a mandala for the true instructions." (Naropa) said there was no water, and (Tilopa) said to offer it with urine. After making the mandala and scattering flowers, the master took some of the mandala's clay and smeared it on Naropa's face, and non-conceptual wisdom arose. This was also to bless him in order to symbolize the co-emergent wisdom. After that, he first explained the empowerments, tantras, and treatises. Then, he explained the instructions on the generation stage, and the key to the basis of samsara, and after explaining all the symbols such as the channels, winds, and bodhicitta, he asked about the meaning of what was symbolized. (Tilopa sang:) "Alas! This is self-awareness, beyond the path of words, not the realm of action. Tilopa has nothing to show, moisten yourself and know." Singing in this way, he showed the symbolized, which is like the ocean. Now, don't wear the clothes of a pandita, but take the practice to heart in the manner of a yogi. In this life, you will attain supreme accomplishment. After making this vow, he disappeared. After that, Naropa was in a small northern city called the Temple of Flower Theft, where an old woman was offering food and living with practice as her core. At one time, when the naked heretics had won the debate and the Buddha's teachings were on the verge of destruction, the king gathered five hundred panditas and handed them garlands of flowers, but no one could take them. The king said, "Discuss it again and debate. If you can't, give the temple to the naked heretics." While the panditas were discussing, the old woman said, "Naropa is staying in my house." So the sangha requested him, and (Naropa), not remembering what Tilopa had said before, agreed. There, the naked heretics were not allowed to come in, so near his temple, there was debate and counter-debate.
