That which is empty by nature and completely purifies the three spheres is called the Great Confession, which is said to be the supreme method for purifying sins. Dwell upright and look correctly. It is the best among all repentances. Thus it is said. Afterwards, dedicate the merit and make aspirations. All of that is the meditation of conceptual thought. For all these meditations of conceptual thought, it is said that it is crucial to proceed one after another, like walking on a single-log bridge, without being interrupted by other thoughts. This is the fourth instruction on visualization. Here, it is said that it will work to focus primarily on the mind-holding of the generation stage, or to practice any of the thirty-two deities. ..... Secondly, there are two aspects to generating the wisdom of union in the mind-stream through the actual yoga: the general presentation of the five stages, and the explanation of the profound stages of visualization. The first has five parts: the individual who is the basis for meditating on the five stages; the classification and summary of the yoga of the five stages; the reasons for the fixed number of five stages; the explanation of what is to be purified by them; and the pointing out of the place of meditation. The first is: from the beginning of training in the intention of the Mahayana path to Buddhahood, up to the stage of single-pointedness and conceptual yoga, one should train properly. If one has already received the common nine empowerments and the three higher empowerments in the mandala of colored powders as a preliminary practice of the generation stage, that is sufficient. If one has not received more than the vase empowerment before, then here, in the painted mandala, one should be an individual who has clearly received the complete four empowerments like union. The second is that the teacher Arya (Ārya, noble, venerable) made five: Vajra recitation, focusing on the mind, self-blessing, the stages of manifest enlightenment, and union. Although bodily isolation was not taught before Vajra recitation, it is not that it is unnecessary or not accepted, because the fruit Vajra recitation is taught, so bodily isolation is necessary as its cause. And, in the five stages, it is said that one should hold the teachings of the three isolations of body, speech, and mind. For example, just as a lute needs a body to produce sound. Arya Deva (Āryadeva, Holy God, Āryadeva) made six stages of completion, because the practice of bodily isolation is indispensable, so it seems that the preliminary practices of Vajra recitation are combined. Chandrakirti (Candrakīrti, Moon Fame) said, the generation stage is first, the three isolations are second, the illusory body is third, the clear light is fourth,

My composition of the fifth chapter, "Entering," considers that the subjects of the upper and lower tantras can be summarized into these five, so it is a general and brief exposition. Therefore, all the views of the father and sons (master and disciples) are consistent in the order of practice. Thirdly, to abandon afflictions and conceptual thoughts in the present moment, and to eradicate habits from the root, requires five stages, namely, the three isolations: single-pointedness of mind is the path of calm abiding (shamatha), thus suppressing present afflictions and conceptual thoughts, while the remaining three are the path of insight (vipassana) that emphasizes wisdom, thus eradicating habits from the root. In the first one, there are also three aspects: the basis, condition, and actual practice of calm abiding. Among them, the preliminary physical isolation is the basis, because one relies on the body blessed by it to cultivate calm abiding. Speech isolation is the condition, because from taming the breath, non-conceptual calm abiding arises. Mind isolation is the actual practice, because relying on mudras or the path of liberation, the wisdom of bliss and emptiness, the samadhi of single-pointedness of mind, arises. Although these can suppress what is to be abandoned, to abandon habits, the latter three paths are still needed, namely, by realizing that phenomena are emptiness through illusion, the habits of apprehended concepts are abandoned; by realizing that the mind is emptiness through luminosity, the habits of apprehending concepts are abandoned; by realizing that the two truths are inseparable through union, the habits of clinging to the two truths as separate entities are abandoned. Therefore, the order is definitely five, because physical isolation is the preliminary of speech isolation. Similarly, the order is also definite, because the former relies on the former, and the latter arises from the latter, which is the order of cause and effect. Relying on physical isolation, the yoga of body vajra arises, and then speech isolation, the yoga of speech vajra, arises, otherwise it is impossible, just as a well-made lute produces beautiful sounds, otherwise it is impossible. Complete speech isolation, due to taming the breath that is the mount of the mind, can give rise to complete mind isolation, the samadhi of mind vajra, with the breath as the mount, just as a person skilled in driving a chariot can reach the destination to be reached, but others cannot. Without the samadhi of mind isolation, there will be no illusion-like samadhi.
