The difficult point of this wonderful rule, the answers to the questions asked by the wise with discerning intelligence, having obtained clear wisdom eyes through the kindness of the Guru, the Tripitaka master hereby reports. The first question, regarding the tree, in the chapter on contaminated and uncontaminated, first, what is called "contaminated" is affliction, and where it grows is contaminated, that is, all conditioned phenomena except the truth of the path, namely the truth of suffering, the truth of origin, the five aggregates, the eleven sources, the seventeen realms, the sphere of dharmas, and one aspect of the realm of dharmas are contaminated. Uncontaminated is the pacification of afflictions and does not grow, that is, the truth of the path, the sphere of dharmas, and one aspect of the realm, space, cessation through discrimination, and non-cessation through discrimination, these six are uncontaminated. What is the method of identification that is in accordance with the meaning of the stated meaning and the root commentary of the Treasury? Also, as stated, are there other seven sections that have the same identification as this? Is the word "and" in "one aspect of the lower realm" and the word "six" in "six" superfluous? If not superfluous, how is the connection made? The answer is: In this tree, the way the eighth chapter of the Treasury is taught is to summarize the knowable, the contaminated, and the uncontaminated into three categories. The knowable

Therefore, regarding what is taught by these first two sections, there are two ways to elaborate: detailed classification and summarization. Firstly, as an antidote to the three types of self-grasping, the Buddha taught the five aggregates, twelve sources, and eighteen elements. Furthermore, it is said that in order to abandon samsara and attain nirvana, the Buddha taught the Four Noble Truths. Secondly, regarding the method of summarization, there are two ways: summarizing into defiled and undefiled, and summarizing into conditioned and unconditioned. In the first case, these treatises arose, so the identification of defiled and undefiled must rely on the Three Dharmas and Four Truths to be determined. In this way, the concise definition of defiled is that it is conditioned phenomena other than the Path Truth. When it is related to the Three Dharmas and Four Truths, the Truth of Suffering and the Truth of Origin are entirely defiled. Here, there is no need to add the distinction of the words "other than the Path Truth," because there is no basis for doubt. Regarding the Three Dharmas, the five aggregates other than the Path Truth, the eleven sources other than that, and the seventeen elements other than that are entirely defiled. Because the ten sources and fifteen elements are defiled, this is explicitly stated in the Abhidharmakośa. And those others that have undefiled qualities are only the Path Truth. Regarding the Dharma source and the Dharma element, even if they are other than the Path Truth, they cannot be definitively determined as defiled, because there are also undefiled qualities that are not the Path Truth. Therefore, it is said that it is "partial." Therefore, the Abhidharmakośa says, "These three are defiled and undefiled, the rest are defiled." And implicitly, it can be obtained that for the twelve sources, "These two are defiled and undefiled, the rest are defiled." Although the main part of the Path Truth is wisdom, it is said that when accompanied by followers, it has the nature of the five aggregates. Therefore, the five aggregates are considered to be both defiled and undefiled. The identification of defiled and undefiled spoken of here is generally consistent, and as you said, this way of identifying defiled and undefiled based on the Three Dharmas and Four Truths is particularly clear. When others refute this teaching, or when questions are raised about difficult points, it also becomes a more reliable basis for faith. Seven
