The Ma's system states that some claim the self and the person are merely different terms, which is a tenet of non-Buddhist schools. Therefore, they assert that even conventionally, there is no self, but the person exists. As proof, they say that through the wisdom that realizes selflessness, one understands the true nature of objects, and self-grasping does not enter into the true nature of objects. I have heard such statements. If that is the case, then the sutras of the Prajnaparamita and the treatises of Nagarjuna and his son would become non-Buddhist tenets, because they also speak of different terms. Moreover, the sutras speak of twelve types of agents: self, sentient being, life, person, nourisher, individual, lord of strength, born of strength, doer, feeler, knower, and seer. The meaning of this is that the noble Nagarjuna considered that as long as there is clinging to the aggregates, there will be self-grasping, and the object of this self-grasping is merely "I." Upon this, he applied the names of the twelve types of agents. Even if one searches for that "I" within the aggregates in five or seven ways, it cannot be found. However, in the unexamined worldly convention, based on one's own appropriation, parts, and limbs, one establishes the taker, the possessor of parts, and the possessor of limbs, like the example of the chariot, as stated by glorious Chandrakirti. Do not deny this point during debate, and do not deceive students during teaching. The proof is also merely apparent, because for the wisdom that realizes the unborn, the signless, and the unelaborated, (birth, etc.) are the same, since birth, etc., exist conventionally. When criticizing others, if seeing that the self (藏文,梵文天城体,梵文罗马拟音,汉语字面意思) དོན་དམ་མེད། (*anātman, anatman, no self*) does not exist leads to liberation, then merely seeing a barren woman and a childless person would also lead to liberation, they retort. This retort seems to be directed at Nagarjuna's statement that "the self exists, and what belongs to the self exists," which is reversed in the ultimate truth, because after fully knowing everything as it is, the two do not arise. If one is confused about such coarse distinctions, how will one understand the subtle ones? One's own system is that there is no self conventionally, and the aggregates, etc., do not exist ultimately. Then that fault would be the same, and if one understands the distinctions of reasoning, one should analyze. Abandoning the distinctions of the treatises and relying solely on the words of ordinary people to establish the distinctions of philosophical tenets is a cause for laughter when seen by the wise. The self that is applied to the words of Dharma and the person...

I and all phenomena, the meaning of "I" as in "no-self," Buddhapālita and Candrakīrti, having explained it as established by its own nature, do not accept it even in name. That and the agent, the person, saying "I" are separate, they say. Some say that the main reason for refuting the self of a person is the person himself. When searching for the five aggregates with seven aspects, because it is not found, the person and the self of the person, because there is no difference, both, exist nominally, but ultimately, are non-existent, this is said to be the Madhyamaka system. The two being non-different is the system of the Tirthikas and the Bahuśrutīyas, others do not have it. Otherwise, the dharma would also become the self of the dharma, because the method of searching is the same. If it is desired, at the time of the post-attainment of the noble ones, when realizing the selflessness of phenomena, it will become realizing only the non-existence of phenomena. The proof is to be known as the coarse wisdom becoming the sign of the result, therefore, if the person is found when searching with seven aspects, it is because it is the meaning of becoming the self of the person. Some, with the view of Madhyamaka, when guiding the minds of those to be tamed, the very first utterance of "I," the chain of subsequent thoughts, through familiarity, the sign of finding the object of attachment, the innate clinging to self, is said to produce various signs. Thereafter, saying "no-self," from the familiarity of subsequent thoughts, the very appearance of non-affirming negation in the mind, is said to be the superior seeing that realizes the ultimate state. Cultivating the object of attachment of the view of self, is the system of the Tirthikas, from the Kashmirian Vaibhāṣikas to the Madhyamikas, this system does not exist. This very thing is what the Protector Maitreya, said, "There is no need to generate the view of self, familiarity has a beginningless time," having said thus, this is already refuted. Saying the words "no-self," if one realizes the Madhyamaka view merely through the familiarity of subsequent thoughts, the distinctions of reasoning spoken from the ocean of Madhyamaka treatises, would become meaningless to hear and think about, because this way of meditating is no different for fools and wise people. If this is superior seeing, it would become impossible to meditate on this and calm abiding in union, because it is not merely following the words. Alas, this degenerate age is wonderful! Although this kind of thing can be held by fools, even by those who have studied the Madhyamaka treatises, this
