In the Bodhisattvacharyavatara, it says: "If one does not exchange one's own happiness For the suffering of other beings, Not only will one not attain Buddhahood, But even in samsara there will be no happiness." How does this not contradict what you say? Regarding the meaning of the Bodhisattvacharyavatara, If you were to take your own tenets As the object of debate and throw dust upon them, Then how would you answer this debate that accords with the Dharma? In short, regarding what the mind desires and does not desire, Giving all that is divided into two, what is desired, To others, and what is not desired, Becoming accustomed to taking it upon oneself, Is the essence of the Sutra of the Three Staffs and the Garland, The treatises Compendium of Trainings, Bodhisattvacharyavatara, etc. The intention of the glorious Atisha, Was to bestow profound experiential instructions Upon the spiritual mentor and teacher, And later it flourished in this land of snow mountains. It is also seen that it explains in detail The methods of meditating on the Buddha and so forth. For the supreme Sakya masters, From the two instructions of the yogi Virupa, There exists a transmission of clear instructions On the practice of this very Dharma. This and the previous tradition of instructions, Are without difference, because they are the essence Of the Buddha's teachings, Blessings arise even from mere faith. Some say that freedom from the four extremes Is no different from the view of the Chinese monk, Which is a mistake. After refuting truth with reasoning, To cling to the absence of truth, Is the ultimate view of the Middle Way, For the sake of realizing the three vehicles, There is no difference in view. That which is valid cognition, the Svatantrika school, Desires to establish it from the object's side, Independent of the mind, That is a common object of refutation. When searching for the meaning designated by name, Taking what is found as valid cognition, Refuting that very thing is the uncommon characteristic Of the Prasangika school. If one understands the difference in the object of refutation, Whatever object the mind clings to, Analyzing it with reasoning and refuting it, All wrong conceptions will be dispelled. Otherwise, after refuting truth, If one must also refute clinging to the absence of truth, Then the mind will become such that the former is harmful, And the latter is limitless. If one refutes what is not truly existent, Then it will become refuting what is truly existent, The true meaning of the two refutations, Is debated for the sake of understanding. These dregs of views, Should be refuted with scripture and reasoning. The Chinese monk, without investigation, Forbidding arbitrary speculation, Is the supreme meditation.

Thus it is said, when this is examined by reason, the two who say that the view is without grasping, in which the four extremes of elaboration are not found, to say that they are the same is mere empty talk, it is the devil's word that abandons the profound. Furthermore, in the Ratnakuta Sutra, existence and non-existence are each an extreme, and the middle is the Madhyamaka. That which is said in the unspoken and unexpressed, that also becomes indistinguishable from the view of the Chinese. Likewise, in the Samadhiraja Sutra, existence and non-existence, purity and impurity, etc., are two extremes, so having abandoned them, it is said that one does not abide even in the middle. And in the Mother Sutra, emptiness and non-emptiness, etc., all actions on the two are said to be acting on signs. And also in the Tantra of Correct Combination, one should not meditate on emptiness, nor should one meditate on non-emptiness. The yogi who does not abandon emptiness should not completely abandon non-emptiness. When grasping emptiness and non-emptiness, not a small amount of conceptualization will arise. What is said in this way also becomes indistinguishable from the view of the Chinese. Maitreya, the protector, in the Uttaratantra, says that the truth of cessation, existence and non-existence, two and not two, the four aspects, cannot be examined. And in the Fundamental Treatise on the Middle Way, one should not say that it is empty, nor should one say that it is not empty, one should not say that it is two or not two. As it is said, furthermore, in that same sutra, the Blessed One's abiding and passing into nirvana, in both of these, the four extremes of elaboration are prevented. And the white lotus with lineage and Aryadeva said this: "Not existent, not non-existent, not existent and non-existent, nor the nature of both, the Madhyamaka who is liberated from the four extremes, the wise ones, only that." What is said in this way also becomes indistinguishable from the view of the Chinese. The meaning of not existent and not non-existent, because of intending conventional and ultimate truth, they say that there is no harm to us. If that is so, all appearing things, both ultimate existence and conventional non-existence, would be fallacies, because of the non-existence of the non-two. Please remember the three characteristics. Some say that the four, such as existence and non-existence, are the meaning of non-reality. Holding the four as subjects, the prevention of reality as the thesis, it is not said in the treatises of the father and sons. In all the Blessed One's passing away and abiding, and non-dual wisdom, etc., the four are prevented.
