Although there is such a saying, it is not any of those two motivations. If the motivation of the causal time is ignorance, then that action must be unwholesome, as stated in the Lower Treatise (Abhidharmakosha). If both the motivation of the causal time and the motivation of that time are ignorance, then it must be unwholesome. If either of the two is ignorance and the other is wholesome, then that action will become mixed, as stated in the Upper Treatise (Jnanaprasthana). In short, in the case of "ignorance conditioning formations," if ignorance is acknowledged as either of the two motivations of formations, such as "there are two motivations, the cause and the motivation of that time," then it is impossible to give an answer to the previous question that can stand in the presence of the wise. In the Upper Treatise (Jnanaprasthana) and the commentary on the Sutra of Dependent Origination, it is also said: "What propels? Ignorance and formations, the two. How does it propel? By imbuing consciousness with predispositions. What is propelled? From name and form to feeling." Therefore, both ignorance and formations are said to be propellants, but they are not said to be motivation and the one with motivation. Third, then, what is the difference between ignorance as a condition for formations and ignorance as a motivation? Please prick up your ears and listen carefully, I will explain it. In short, the ignorance of condition is the ignorance included in the innate self-grasping that clings to the five aggregates as "I." And the ignorance of motivation is the ignorance that is one of the three roots born from the three roots of action. To differentiate in detail, there seem to be two views on the first of ignorance: the Vaibhashikas and the Sutrantikas who speak of Abhidharma consider the innate view of self and the mental factor of delusion, which are different entities, as one. The former considers the view of the collection of destructibles as wisdom, which is one of the ten great mental factors, and ignorance as delusion, which is one of the six great mental factors of affliction, so they consider the two as different entities. The latter considers ignorance as bad wisdom, and bad wisdom is a view, and ignorance is concordant with it, and wisdom is to be afflicted by ignorance, so ignorance

It is because of refuting that it is not reasonable to have bad wisdom. The Sutra masters of the Valid Cognition school and the teacher Chandrakirti accept the innate view of the perishable aggregate itself. As it is said in the Commentary on Valid Cognition: Since love and so on are not contradictory to ignorance, they do not cut off the extremely grave sins. All sins have that as their root, and that is the view of the perishable aggregate. And the way in which the view of the perishable aggregate becomes the root of sins is also: Whoever sees a self, for him, there is always attachment to "I." From attachment, there is craving for happiness, and from craving, he obscures all faults. And so on. And in the Engaging in the Bodhisattva Deeds it says: All afflictions and faults, without exception, in the perishable aggregate, those born from views, are seen by the mind. The yogi, having realized that the self is the object of this, therefore prevents the self. It is said, and that itself, in the Root Wisdom, says: When ignorance ceases, activities and so on do not arise. When ignorance ceases, it is by meditating on that with wisdom. It is because they consider it to be the meaning of. The meaning of those is also, if there is an innate clinging to "I" based on the five aggregates, then by the power of that, all the meritorious actions and the unwavering actions that are accumulated are merely virtuous with outflows and become the cause of samsara. For example, by the power of innate clinging to "I," wanting to be born as a desire god, one takes vows, and wanting to be born in a higher realm, one meditates on meditative absorptions. At that time, the motivation at the time of the cause is not innate clinging to "I," but rather, "I shall take vows! I shall meditate on meditative absorptions!" Because it is the very first altruistic intention, it is virtuous. This key point must be well understood. Secondly, the ignorance of motivation is, born from the three root actions. In the commentary, killing born from delusion is like this: those who perform sacrifices, and those who kill the wise who have the Dharma mind by taking the king's laws as the standard, and the Sparsiks and others say that if parents are old or afflicted with serious illness, they should be killed, and so on. And taking what is not given born from delusion is like this: taking the king's laws as the standard, robbing because of cutting off those who should not be killed by punishment, and so on. And the Brahmins say that all of this was given to the Brahmins by Brahma.
