If one doesn't know, then it is indeed a question. It seems like saying it is not a refutation. If one says it contradicts the trustworthy scripture, what does one say? If one says it contradicts the reasoning of reality, what does one say? If one says it contradicts the commitment, what does one say? Because it seems that one considers these and so on as just questions. If one understands the key points of those two well, it seems like it is not a refutation, because one has tried one's best to refute. There is such a fault! Saying "What do you answer?" and saying "There is such a fault" are not different in terms of question and refutation. For example, saying to an innocent person, "You stole the property, what do you answer?" and simply saying "You stole the property" are not different in whether they become an argument or not. Considering such kinds of things, the King of Reasoning (Nagarjuna) said: "Some say this is the path, some say this is the stump, others say it as I do, examine those differences." One should understand this. Those wonderful scholars, when explaining any system, after extracting all the difficult points of that system well, they explain and teach others in the manner of examining and questioning. The answer to this is: It is not possible to explain and teach others without reversing the meaning, merely by examining and questioning the difficult points. One must explain and teach others by means of cutting off doubts about the difficult points. In that case, whether it is a pledge, or a proof, or a tenet, or a treatise that shows those, whichever it may be, if it is something that shows a mistaken meaning, then there is no need for others to say a refutation. Merely by saying that, or establishing the proof, the fault becomes clearer and is understood as something to be abandoned. If the meaning of what is said is not mistaken, then others asking questions or saying refutations will make the qualities clearer and it will be understood as something to be accepted. Therefore, those who follow the Sakya lineage of the noble Sakya fathers and sons, who possess intelligence and faith, should also rely on this well-spoken answer to trust and enter this treatise again. Thus, the treatise, the precious immeasurable palace, the words and meaning

When novel paintings appear, Desiring to understand their meaning, one asks, "What is this?" If you inquire of the wise, this is everyone's answer: If someone intervenes in this matter out of hatred, Gathering the spittle of some self-proclaimed wise men of Ü-Tsang (དབུས་གཙང་), And using it to challenge the great treatises, You are contradicting this very thing. However, even if you yourself have ascertained this truth, If you ask thinking that others may not have ascertained it, That is like covering your own eye of wisdom with the hand of pride, Merely stealing for the sake of the desires of the eight worldly concerns. If someone with discernment asks for the sake of fame, Then most of the questions seem to be for showing off. If you ask because you do not know and want to learn, That contradicts the questioner spreading a feast in all directions. Other than that, for all the sutras and tantras, What is the need to create various, Poison-tipped arrows of slander, Against the protective treatises, the golden armor? Fearing that the degenerate age will turn into a clamor of partisanship, If one remains neutral, they proclaim that there is no answer. If one gives an answer, they say that it is intervening out of hatred, So what should I do now? Whether it is a question or a refutation, Seeing the treatise, the wish-fulfilling jewel, defiled by mud, To purify it, with pure intention, I have written this reasoning without hesitation. This itself is an offering that pleases the Teacher, It is the sunlight illuminating the lotus lake of the teachings. It is a pleasant letter for the ears of the holders of the teachings, It is a sacred substance that pleases the ocean of Dharma protectors. The representative of Shakyamuni Buddha, the venerable Sakya, The gods who greatly rejoice in the teachings, from the earth to the lower realms, Are joyfully dancing, And various songs are surely proclaiming this meaning. Those holders of the teachings, the great beings of this land, Please behold with radiant eyes! Those followers, intelligent youths, Please let your hairs stand on end with joy and delight! Those patrons, those who possess wealth, Please write, offer, and give alms! Those Dharma protectors, those who manifest terrifying forms, Please dispel obstacles and accomplish favorable conditions! May this virtue, compiled by Lhawang Dorje, Completely vanquish all the hosts of heretical demons, And may the drumbeat of the sacred Dharma, Continuously resound to the very end of the ocean of Shakyamuni's teachings! Complete.

This treatise, entitled "Questions and Answers on the Differentiation of the Three Vows: Refuting the Errors of the Three Vows," was written because I, Sakya Bhikshu Sonam Senge, who expounds the logic of reality, having long relied on the lotus feet of the omniscient Kunga Zangpo and his sons, who are inseparable from the Lord Vajradhara, the master of the mandala ocean, and having heard many Sutras, Tantras, and Instructions, at the time when the Teacher had been dwelling in the Dharmadhatu for three thousand six hundred and ten years, in the waxing half of the sixth month of the Fire Monkey year (1956), was composed at the Tagna Rinchen Tsetup Tenzin Namgyal Monastery, and the scribe was Zhonnu Sangpo. May this treatise, the wish-fulfilling jewel, become the cause of its non-decline and flourishing through the gate of explanation and practice. The sole medicine for the suffering of beings, the source of all happiness, may the teachings, together with gain and respect, abide for a long time. Auspicious! Questions and Answers on the Treatise of the Three Vows: Refuting the Errors of the Three Vows.
