Na. The supreme of speakers said, This is acting in accordance with the world. Without destruction and without birth, Although equal to the realm of Dharma, Yet showing the eon of burning, This is acting in accordance with the world. In the three times, of sentient beings, Their nature is not an object of focus, And also showing the realm of sentient beings, This is acting in accordance with the world. Thus it was said. These are said to be the definitive meaning of the all-ground consciousness. Therefore, it should be spoken to all schools of thought with crude intelligence, such as those who believe that it does not exist in name. If it is the definitive meaning, then is it pervasive that it exists in name? That is not the case either, for even though separated from the view of the collection of destructible things, the Buddha said: "Just as 'I' and 'mine' are shown." Likewise, although things are without inherent existence, It is shown as existing, which is the definitive meaning itself. As it is said, the Buddha has an attachment to 'I' and 'mine,' and things existing by their own nature are also said to be the definitive meaning. In short, this is the essential instruction: the naturally abiding lineage, the Sugata-garbha, the ultimate truth, and the Dharmadhatu are to be directly seen by the wisdom of the self-awareness of each noble one. Therefore, their own nature is the definitive meaning, and although it is not the conventional truth, as shown by the nine similes in the Tathagatagarbha Sutra and the Uttaratantra Shastra, these exist in the continuum of sentient beings as the basis and the dependent, or as the way of accomplishment. This is the straight meaning, because apart from the nature of mind, which is free from the four extremes of elaboration, there is nothing that exists as the basis and the dependent, or as the way of accomplishment, as shown by the similes. The intention of saying that it exists as shown by the similes is based on the nature of mind being free from elaboration. As the Lankavatara Sutra says: "Great Wisdom, the Tathagatas, Arhats, perfectly complete Buddhas, have shown the Tathagatagarbha by the meaning of words such as emptiness, true limit, Nirvana, unborn, without characteristics, and without wishes." The necessity is, as the Uttaratantra says: "Discouraged, despising inferior sentient beings, not holding the right view, and also

As the scripture says, "It is to eliminate the five faults such as attachment. Whatever has these faults is said to be for the purpose of eliminating them." Therefore, it is to eliminate the five faults. If it is not said to exist in the manner of the support and the supported, or in the manner of establishment, then these five faults cannot be eliminated. What harms the truly existent is that, as the nine similes say, if it exists in the manner of the support and the supported, or in the manner of establishment, it would be like the non-Buddhists who believe that there is a self that is a different entity from the aggregates. As the *Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra* says: "World Honored One, just as a precious jewel of great value is completely wrapped in a dirty cloth, so too, wrapped in the cloth of the aggregates, realms, and sources, oppressed by the stain of desire, hatred, and ignorance, stained by the stain of complete conceptualization, saying it is permanent, stable, and enduring, World Honored One, when the Tathāgata speaks of the *tathāgatagarbha*, how is this not the same as the non-Buddhists speaking of a self? World Honored One, the non-Buddhists also say it is permanent, without qualities, pervasive, and indestructible. World Honored One, they thus speak of a self." The World Honored One said, "Great Wisdom, the Tathāgata's teaching of the *tathāgatagarbha* is not the same as the non-Buddhists' speaking of a self. Great Wisdom, the Tathāgatas, the Arhats, the perfectly complete Buddhas, speak of emptiness, etc., as it is said in the context of the intention." As it is said, if the nature of the mind is not emptiness, but there is a truly existent *tathāgatagarbha*, it would be like the non-Buddhists speaking of a self. Therefore, the *dharmadhātu* and the *tathāgatagarbha*, etc., are definitive in meaning, because they are the ultimate truth. The existence of these in the sentient beings' continuum is provisional in meaning, because it is the conventional truth. If you wonder what proves the difference between these two reasons, as the *Uttaratantra* says: "To make beings know, the peaceful nature, thus the reality, the self-nature is completely pure, afflictions are originally exhausted. With the wisdom that knows the ultimate knowable, seeing that all beings, have the nature of omniscience, thus it is said to have."
