The great are endowed with wisdom in all ways. The wise abandon afflictions along with their imprints. As it is said in the Jataka: 'One with little learning is like a blind person, not knowing the way to meditate. What increases wisdom is listening. Listening is the lamp that dispels the darkness of ignorance. Meeting with virtuous people is the best of men. What cannot be stolen by thieves is the best of wealth.' As it is said in the Bodhisattva Pitaka: 'Listening makes one know the dharmas. Listening makes one turn away from sin. Listening makes one abandon what is meaningless. Listening makes one attain nirvana.' As it is said in the Vinaya-vibhanga: 'There are five benefits to much listening: being skilled in the aggregates, being skilled in the elements, being skilled in the sense bases, being skilled in dependent origination, and not relying on others for its instructions and subsequent teachings.' There is also blessing in contemplating the meaning and putting it into practice. As it is said in the Sutra of Meeting Father and Son: 'Whoever listens for ten kalpas and teaches it to others, compared to whoever meditates on this for just the time it takes to snap one's fingers, the latter's merit increases much more.' As it is said in the Sutra of Great Liberation, the Extensive Chapter: 'Those who wish to repay the kindness of the Victorious One, meditating for a moment, is greater than all sentient beings filling space giving the gift of life. Meditating on contemplation is of great benefit.' Thus it is said. Listening to and explaining such pure teachings of the Buddha's words and treatises is called listening. Properly examining its meaning is called contemplation. Diligently accomplishing it is known as meditation. Having understood this, practice listening, contemplation, and meditation in this way. Such listening, contemplation, and meditation are the pure teachings of the Buddha. As it is said in the 'Thubpa Gongsal': 'In short, what the Buddha spoke, what the compilers compiled, what the accomplished ones meditated on, what the pandits taught, what the translators translated, and what is renowned among the wise is the Buddha's teaching, so one must listen, teach, meditate, and practice it.' The chapter on the vows of individual liberation, the first. Second, the practice of the bodhisattva vows has three parts: generally showing the distinctions of generating the mind, specifically explaining the generation of the mind of the Great Vehicle, and concluding with the pure teachings.
