If you think that this is the Sugata-garbha (Tathāgatagarbha) that becomes the cause, then it is not so. If there is a distinction between whether the Dharmadhatu is a garbha or not, then there must be a distinction of different entities. Because there is none of this, the Buddha proclaimed it, and it can also be established by reason. As it is said in the Mother Sutra: "Son of lineage, whatever is the suchness of these dharmas, and whatever is the suchness of the Tathagata, that is the one suchness. Son of lineage, suchness cannot be divided into two." This is not to be distinguished from the perspective of essence, but from the perspective of dharma, there are distinctions of fourfold emptiness, sixteenfold emptiness, and twentyfold emptiness, and from the perspective of establishing the dependent dharma, there are distinctions of three and thirteen. Fourth, therefore, there are two reasons for placing the free from elaboration as the essence: the reason itself and the scriptural authority as proof. First, therefore, "Thus" and so on, four verses, because the nature of mind, free from elaboration and union, is placed as the essence, therefore, for sentient beings and so on, if not grasped by means, they will wander in samsara, and if grasped by means, Buddhas will arise. Second, there are three: the scriptural authority of Nagarjuna, the scriptural authority of Maitreya, and the source of the Eight Thousand Verse Prajnaparamita Sutra. First, "Noble Nagarjuna" and so on, six verses, if the mind is truly established, then liberation from bondage is impossible, and because it is empty, liberation from bondage is possible. Second, "Mahayana" and so on, thirteen verses, the meaning of the scripture is shown by "approaching" and so on. Its meaning is that when the lineage awakens, the desire to abandon suffering and the mind of seeking nirvana are both reasonable as proof that sentient beings have the Sugata-dhatu, that is, the nature of mind free from elaboration. Therefore, the nature of mind is free from elaboration, because the mind of seeking arises for realizing freedom from elaboration, and aversion arises for elaboration. This is like stating heat as proof that there is fire. Third, "This meaning" and so on, in the chapter on Dharma Superiority of the Eight Thousand Verse Prajnaparamita Sutra, it says: "Son of lineage, emptiness has no coming or going, whatever emptiness is, that is the Tathagata. Son of lineage, reality does not

Without coming or going, that which is as it is, is the Thus-Gone One. Son of lineage, for those free from desire, there is no coming or going; that which is free from desire is the Thus-Gone One. Thus it is. The noble Dharma Ariser asked the Bodhisattva Ever Weeping: 'From where do those Thus-Gone Ones come, and where do they go?' He replied: 'Those Thus-Gone Ones come from nowhere and go nowhere. They do not move from suchness; suchness is the Thus-Gone One.' Thus it is. If one sees a mirage shimmering, from where does the water of the mirage come, and where does it go? Just as one perceives water where there is none, so too, clinging to the appearance of form and sound in the Thus-Gone One and conceiving of coming and going is the inferior wisdom of a child. Thus it is said. Fifth, establishing existence through the method of accomplishing the essence is taught as definitive meaning, which has two parts: establishing definitive meaning through the gateway of the three dharmas, and citing scriptural sources as evidence. First: However, the Sutras, etc., are fourteen in number: other than the self-nature of mind, which is free from elaboration, there is no Sugata-essence. However, the Sutra of the Thus-Gone One Essence, the Sutra of the Garland of Glory, the Sutra Benefiting Angulimala, the Great Nirvana Sutra, and some other Sutras, and in the Uttaratantra, it is said that just as there is a precious golden Buddha image inside a tattered garment, so sentient beings have the essence of the Buddha adorned with marks and signs, which is said to be intentional, etc. How is it said? As in the first Sutra: Sons of lineage, likewise, beneath the house-like mind of manifest clinging of all sentient beings, there is the essence of the Thus-Gone One, with power, fearlessness, unmixed, and the treasury of all the Buddha's teachings, and a great treasure, but those sentient beings suffer because they are attached to form, sound, smell, taste, and touch, and they wander in samsara, and because they have not heard that great Dharma treasure, they have not attained it, nor do they strive for purification. Sons of lineage, then the Thus-Gone One appears in the world, and among the Bodhisattvas, this great Dharma treasure is truly well
