Through practice, liberation is attained by exhausting karma and afflictions. Karma and afflictions arise from conceptualization, and those elaborations arise from elaboration, which will cease through emptiness. Thus it is said. If that is grasped by skillful means, it is the basis of all the Dharmas of the path, because this mind that arises from the power of delusion awakens the roots of virtue. When striving for the state of one's own mind, the desire to abandon samsara and the aspiration to seek meaning in Nirvana arise, and from that, the practice of those arises. The Uttaratantra states: 'To see the faults of suffering and happiness in existence and Nirvana, arises from having the lineage; for those without the lineage, it does not exist.' Thus it is said. The Abhisamayalankara states: 'The support of practice is the nature of the Dharmadhatu.' Thus it is said. In the extensive commentary, after explaining the thirteen practices, it is said that the basis is called lineage. When that is separated from all adventitious stains by the power of meditating on the path, it is the basis of all the qualities of self-benefit, such as the powers, and the qualities of benefiting others, such as the two form bodies. The Dharmadhatu, which possesses the two purities, is inseparable from the qualities of the uncontaminated, such as the powers, and that appears to the disciples in the order of pure and impure, from the two form bodies to rabbits, tigers, and lions, as well as trees and bridges. Asanga said: 'The qualities of the stainless Buddha are the Dharmakaya of the Tathagata, which is the transformed basis, and that is all the Buddha-Dharmas, such as the ten powers, which are beyond the world.' Thus it is said. The Uttaratantra states: 'Here, the first is the Dharmakaya, and the latter is the Rupakaya. Just as form resides in space, the latter resides in the former.' Thus it is said. The third is that in some Sutras, what is taught as mind in the Hearer Vehicle is said to be the essence of the Tathagata. The meaning of this is that the Hearers enter into practice relying on the Tathagatagarbha, so it is taught in accordance with their tenets and doors. They do not want the mind to be empty, and in the aspect of emptiness and the union of clarity and emptiness, the Tathagatagarbha cannot be established, and in the aspect of clarity, they do not want the six aggregates of consciousness.

The five sense consciousnesses cannot serve as the basis for bondage and liberation, therefore they should be placed upon the mind consciousness. The Treasury states: The nature of mind arising without attachment, having few desires and being content, can be classified as the same kind. Because such mental events are solely the retinue of the mind consciousness. Some sutras explain the Alaya-consciousness in order to lead Mind-Only practitioners to engage in practice based on the Tathagatagarbha. This is spoken in accordance with their tenets and paths. Those who do not desire emptiness and union are the same as before. In terms of clarity, among the eight aggregates of consciousness, the first seven aggregates cannot serve as the basis for depositing the seeds of all phenomena of samsara and nirvana. However, it is not the case that the Alaya-consciousness, as desired by the Mind-Only school, is said to be the Tathagatagarbha. This is because the Alaya-consciousness with the characteristics they describe cannot be established. Therefore, it is spoken with the intention of the clarity aspect of the previous union. In the Madhyamaka treatises, there are four ways of speaking: from the perspective of the manifestation of phenomena, from the perspective of the emptiness of dharmata, from the perspective of the dharmakaya, and from all three perspectives. The first is spoken to the mind in order to know that the agent of samsara and nirvana is the mind. The Vajra Tent Tantra states: "From the precious mind, there is no Buddha and no person, no meaning of the place of consciousness, and nothing external." And the Sambuta states: "The mind, obscured by the darkness of many conceptualizations, maddened by complete destruction and like lightning, stained by the difficult-to-remove stains of attachment and so on, is said by Vajradhara to be samsara." And Saraha says: "The mind itself is the seed of all, from which samsara and nirvana arise, which gives the fruit of desires, I prostrate to the mind like a wish-fulfilling jewel." Thus it is declared. The second is that if the mind were truly established, it would be impossible to generate antidotes and eliminate obscurations. Because it is empty of truth, in order to know that it can serve as the basis for all bondage and liberation, the emptiness of the mind is taught. This is how it is taught in most of the sutras and shastras, and the scriptural authority of "For whom is emptiness suitable?" and so on.
