The manner of non-arising. The collection of limbs. The definite number of limbs. The meaning of dependent origination. The manner of completion in how many lifetimes. The analysis of similar grounds. The first has twelve, among which, regarding ignorance, some say: a mental factor that engages with an unclear aspect of the object. If so, then the mental factor that arises in the retinue of the all-ground consciousness, the subject of the thesis. It should be that signified. Because of that definition. The thesis is established, because the all-ground consciousness is the primary mind that engages with an unclear aspect of the object. Some say: a mental factor that contradicts the wisdom of knowledge and the manner of grasping. The ignorance that contradicts the wisdom of knowledge and the manner of grasping, and the corresponding desire, the subject of the thesis. It should be that signified. Because of that definition. The thesis is established, because the ignorance that contradicts the wisdom of knowledge and the manner of grasping has the same object and aspect. The own system is that any mental factor of delusion that contradicts the wisdom of knowledge and the manner of grasping, and that is capable of initiating contaminated actions, that is the definition of ignorance taught here. Regarding that, some say: the ignorance that has become abandoned by meditation in the continuum of a Hearer disciple, a noble being, the subject of the thesis. It should be the latter. Because of that signified. If asserted, then there should be newly created actions that project rebirth in that continuum. Because of that assertion. Answer: not pervasive, because in that continuum, the action that accomplishes rebirth does not nourish the action that projects rebirth. Because there are no afflictions in that continuum that initiate the action that accomplishes rebirth. If not established, then it contradicts that the ignorance that has become abandoned by meditation in that continuum cannot initiate contaminated actions. In the analysis of whether the ignorance taught here is abandoned by seeing or abandoned by meditation, in the "Explanation of the Hidden Meaning," it says: because this is the action that projects rebirth, and in the commentary on the "Sutra of Dependent Origination," it says: it is not beneficial to seeing the truth. Therefore, it is only the ignorance that is to be abandoned by seeing. Some scholars say: that is not reasonable, because the ignorance taught here is also present in the continua of birds and wild animals, etc., whose minds have not been transformed by philosophical systems. Pervasive, if it is ignorance that has become abandoned by seeing, then it is the imputational object to be abandoned that has been transformed in mind by philosophical systems.

is necessary. Furthermore, the merit accumulated by desire and the unwavering formations will become unwholesome, because all the afflictions to be abandoned by seeing that are practiced in desire are only unwholesome. Having thus prohibited, our own system is only what is abandoned by meditation, because it is the common cause of all formations, and because it is the unmixed ignorance that arises in the retinue of the afflicted mind. The ignorance that arises in the retinue of the mind consciousness is not the ignorance taught here, because it does not follow after merit and unwavering formations. Then, since the ignorance that arises in the retinue of the afflicted mind looks inward, how does it generate good and unwholesome actions? If one thinks that there are two kinds of motivation, the motivation at the time of the cause and the motivation at that time, then "ignorance conditions formations" refers to the motivation at the time of the cause, not the motivation at that time, otherwise merit and unwavering actions would also become only afflictions, because ignorance is the condition of that time. Thus, it is explained with elaboration. To show that this is unreasonable, there are three faults: the fault of self-contradiction, the fault of the uncertain proof of one's own system, and the fault that the motivation at that time is not included in the twelve limbs. First, if the ignorance of the motivation of others is unwholesome, then it is inferred that all actions initiated by it should become unwholesome. In order to establish that one's own ignorance of motivation is afflicted, but all actions initiated by it do not become only afflicted, it is stated that it refers to the motivation at the time of the cause, which is the same in every way, because others can also say that it refers to the motivation at the time of the cause. Second, as a proof that it is not the ignorance of the retinue of mind consciousness, it is said that it does not follow after merit and unwavering formations, which is also too crude, because if it is the ignorance of motivation, it is not pervasive in initiating all three actions. Third, the ignorance that becomes the motivation at that time of formations, the subject of the proposition, you twelve limbs

Because it is not encompassed by the two. Because you are not encompassed by any of the twelve links, from ignorance to old age and death. If you say that it is encompassed by the second link, that is not correct. Because the second link is the ignorance that causes everything. Furthermore, due to the ignorance corresponding to the wrong view that there is no cause and effect, there is no karma that causes rebirth in the lower realms. If it is the ignorance that causes, it must be the ignorance of afflicted intention. Our own system has both what is abandoned by seeing and what is abandoned by meditation. As it says in the "Ground of Being": "Is it said that one who has entered the stream has abandoned a limb? It is one aspect of all, not something that has been completely abandoned. As is the case with one who has entered the stream, so too is the case with one who returns once. Is it said that one who does not return has abandoned a limb? All that is practiced in the desire realm. In the form and formless realms, there is no certainty about what is practiced. Is it said that an Arhat has abandoned a limb? All that is practiced in the three realms." As it is said. The ignorance taught here can be divided into two types: ignorance about the results of actions and ignorance about the meaning of just that. The former causes non-virtuous actions, and the latter causes virtuous and unwavering actions, as explained in the Compendium of Categories. Formation is a contaminated action that is caused by its own cause, ignorance, and is capable of projecting future existence. It is divided into three types: non-virtuous actions, virtuous actions, and unwavering actions. Their characteristics are, in order: actions that project rebirth in the lower realms, actions that project rebirth in the happy realms of the desire realm, and actions that project rebirth in the higher realms. Consciousness, if taken from the perspective of the cause, is the part of the alaya consciousness seed that holds the karmic imprints; if taken from the perspective of the result, it is the consciousness that first arises in the place of birth, relying on karma. Asanga holds the part of the cause, because it is said, "What are the limbs that cause projection? They are ignorance, formation, and consciousness." Nagarjuna holds the part of the result, because it is said, "From two, seven arise." Then, in the Sutra on Dependent Arising, it says, "This consciousness is divided into six aggregates.
