If it is said that one will encounter karma that has not been created, that is not the case. Because one will experience the result of the karma accumulated in one's own continuum, it is the reason why cause and effect are each definite. All of these are contained within the power of the word "dependent arising." The eighth (profound dependent arising) has five points. These internal and external dependent arisings are phenomena. They are profound in terms of cause, because by the two reasons of having no agent and having a cause, they avoid having no cause and arising from incompatible causes. They are profound in terms of their own nature, because they have the meaning of appearing as self, but actually having no self. They are profound in terms of arising, because by the two reasons of having no other's control and no arising, although results arise from various conditions, they do not arise under the guidance of the wisdom of those conditions. They are profound in terms of abiding, because by the two reasons of impermanence and momentariness, although there is no abiding in ultimate reality, they appear to abide continuously in conventional reality. They are profound in terms of origination, because by the four points of cause and effect being continuous, etc., the way in which results arise from causes is very difficult to understand. Again, they are also seen as profound from other perspectives. In this way, one's own essence does not abide even for a moment, yet one also clings to it as permanent. Without the guidance of wisdom, the unwavering power of conditions also clings to the fact that predictable results arise from them. Although there are no sentient beings in ultimate reality, they are also established as sentient beings in conventional reality. Although there is no agent, one also clings to the fact that the results of actions done will not be wasted. Arising from conditions that are free from the four extremes, therefore, is also regarded as profound. Why is it free from the four extremes? These internal and external dependent arisings are phenomena. They are not made by themselves, because it is contradictory for oneself to do something to oneself. They do not arise from others, because dissimilar types cannot become cause and effect, and the causes and conditions of similar types are unreasonable. They do not arise from both, because it would entail having both faults. They do not arise from no cause, because it would entail either always arising or never arising. These are the ways in which proponents of realism prevent the four extremes of arising, but the Madhyamikas believe that it is not arising from others.
