The Blessed One said, "This arising, that arises," and also, there is reason to say that those two are caused by impermanent conditions. Even if it arises from something unmoving, if a permanent thing produces a result, then all results would have to be produced simultaneously. Therefore, considering this, the Blessed One said, "This being born, that is born." Also, that itself, there is reason to say that it arises from the condition of ability. Even if it is unmoving and impermanent, it is not that any condition can produce all the results, but the result is produced by the condition of the ability to produce. Therefore, considering this, the Blessed One said, "Conditioned by ignorance are the formations." Secondly, there are two: the dependent arising of samsara and the dependent arising of purification. The first has two dependent arisings: internal and external. The first has four aspects: the aspect of dependence, the aspect of the support, the aspect of what has already been established, and the aspect of what has not been established but is established. These four are, in order: like the arising of eye consciousness from the eye faculty and visible objects; like the arising of formations from ignorance, up to the arising of old age and death from birth; like the beings of the three realms existing by relying on food; and like the separate accomplishment of happy and unhappy migrations by relying on good and bad conduct. The second has two aspects: the aspect of dependence and the aspect of the support. The first is: like the sprout arising from the seed, and the trunk arising from that, and so on. The latter is: like the formation and destruction of the vessel world by the common karma of sentient beings. Secondly, the dependent arising of purification has two aspects: the aspect of dependence and the aspect of the support. The first is: like the path of accumulation arising from the path of joining, and the path of seeing arising from that. The second is: like the arising of special qualities such as the divine eye and clairvoyance by relying on meditation. Third, there are nine: nature, limbs, classification of limbs, abbreviation of limbs, establishment of limbs as conditions, showing the function of limbs, summarizing limbs into samsara, dependent arising

The meaning of 'la'. The way of understanding the profound and difficult to comprehend. The way of meditating in forward and reverse order. First, arising from causes and conditions that possess three characteristics is the characteristic of dependent origination. What are the three characteristics? Non-wavering, and so on. Among them, the first eliminates confusion about the past, in order to dispel the doubt that these external and internal fruits were created by some creator such as Ishvara (自在天) who had preconceived ideas. The second eliminates confusion about one's own nature in the present, because it arises from permanent causes such as the chief one, it dispels the attachment to permanence, which does not arise and cease momentarily, because there is no possibility for a permanent result to arise from impermanent causes and conditions. The third eliminates confusion about the future, in order to eliminate the claim that from dissimilar causes such as animal sacrifices, dissimilar results such as the happiness of the heavens will arise in the future. Because the result arises in accordance with the cause, dissimilar results do not arise from dissimilar causes. The second, third, and sixth will be explained in the context of the Madhyamaka school. Fourth, in the Compendium of Topics it says: How are the limbs established as the nature of conditions? It should be understood that habituation, force, attention, and co-emergence are also established as the nature of the limbs as conditions, and they should be applied accordingly. The meaning of what is said is: Habituation is the causal condition, force is the immediately preceding condition, attention is the objective condition, and co-emergence is the dominant condition. Therefore, there is a reason to say that ignorance is the causal condition of formation, because the formation that exists in the mindstream imbued with the habituation of ignorance projects rebirth, and not by others. Therefore, there is a reason to say that it is its immediately preceding condition, because by the power of ignorance, the later formation arises from the earlier formation. Therefore, there is a reason to say that it is its objective condition, because by the power of that ignorance, one apprehends objects in a reversed manner through improper attention.
