If aging and death have no result, then samsara would have an end; if they do, then the number of the twelve links of dependent origination would be uncertain. In response to this: From affliction arises affliction, action itself is the basis thereof, from that (action) arise the basis and affliction, this is the system of the limbs of existence. As it is said, the details will be explained below. That is to say, one part of the twelve links mentioned in the sutras, and the two parts of the twelve links included in samsara, must necessarily be complete, which seems to be the view of all the pitakas of the Great and Small Vehicles. Here, even if only one part of the twelve links mentioned in the sutras is established, three lifetimes are still necessary; while one part of the twelve links included in samsara is sufficient with two lifetimes. Because the ignorance and action of the previous life, and the three of craving, grasping, and becoming are complete; between consciousness and feeling in this life, birth and death are complete, so there also completes one part of the cause and effect of samsara. The three of craving, grasping, and becoming in this life, and the two of ignorance and action are complete; the two of birth and death in the next life, and the five between consciousness and feeling are complete, so there also completes one part of the cause and effect of samsara. Then, why does the sutra not establish one part of the cause and effect of samsara as the twelve links, but establish two parts as the twelve links? In response to this, there are two necessities: the necessity of establishing it in three lifetimes, and the necessity of realizing that the former is the cause of the latter. The first has already been explained, the second is that if one part of the twelve links is established as the twelve links in the sutra, then the former as the cause of the latter cannot be established. Because at that time it is necessary to take the three of craving, grasping, and becoming as the cause, and the interval from consciousness to feeling as the result, therefore the craving cannot arise from the condition of feeling. When the two parts are established as one part of the twelve links, the craving can arise from the condition of feeling. Because at that time feeling is the result of the former part, and craving is the cause of the latter part, and also because the two lifetimes of the twelve links mentioned in the sutra are realized as one part. What doubts do others have? The seventh is: Then, the sutra speaks of two things, "dependent origination" and "arising."
