Entering into and rising from. What are the eight? Subhuti, here, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva perceives forms as forms with form, this is the first liberation. Perceiving external forms while possessing the idea of formlessness internally, this is the second liberation. Having a sublime inclination, this is the third liberation. Since he completely transcends the idea of form in every way, since the ideas of resistance have disappeared, since he does not attend to the various ideas, thinking 'space is infinite,' he dwells having attained the sphere of infinite space, this is the fourth liberation. Since he completely transcends the sphere of infinite space in every way, thinking 'consciousness is infinite,' he dwells having attained the sphere of infinite consciousness, this is the fifth liberation. Since he completely transcends the sphere of infinite consciousness in every way, thinking 'there is nothing at all,' he dwells having attained the sphere of nothingness, this is the sixth liberation. Since he completely transcends the sphere of nothingness in every way, he dwells having attained the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, this is the seventh liberation. Since he completely transcends the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception in every way, he dwells having attained the cessation of perception and feeling, this is the eighth liberation. Thus, he enters into and rises from these eight liberations in accordance with and not in accordance with the proper order. He enters into and rises from the nine successive meditative stabilizations in accordance with and not in accordance with the proper order. What are the nine? Here, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, secluded from desire, secluded from unwholesome dharmas, with initial application and sustained application, dwells having attained the first dhyana, which is born of seclusion and accompanied by joy and pleasure. Since the initial application and sustained application are pacified, since there is inner purity, since the mind becomes unified, he dwells having attained the second dhyana, which is without initial application and sustained application, born of concentration, and accompanied by joy and pleasure. That joy

Having become detached from desire, endowed with mindfulness and clear comprehension, he dwells in equanimity, experiencing pleasure with the body, which the noble ones describe as being mindful, contemplating pleasure, and being in equanimity. Thus, he attains and abides in the third meditation, which is without joy and full of bliss. Having abandoned pleasure, and with the previous cessation of mental pleasure and displeasure, there is neither pleasure nor pain. He attains and abides in the fourth meditation, which is purity of equanimity and mindfulness. Having completely transcended all perceptions of form, with the cessation of perceptions of resistance, and not attending to various perceptions, he attains and abides in the sphere of infinite space, thinking, "Space is infinite." Having completely transcended the sphere of infinite space, he attains and abides in the sphere of infinite consciousness, thinking, "Consciousness is infinite." Having completely transcended the sphere of infinite consciousness, he attains and abides in the sphere of nothingness, thinking, "There is nothing at all." Having completely transcended the sphere of nothingness, he attains and abides in the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. Having completely transcended the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, he attains and abides in the cessation of perception and feeling. In this way, he enters and emerges from these nine successive meditative states in accordance with and contrary to the order. Thus, he distinguishes these eight liberations and nine successive meditative states, and enters the Lion's Play Samadhi. Subhuti, what is the Lion's Play Samadhi of a Bodhisattva Mahasattva? Subhuti, here, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, secluded from desire, secluded from unwholesome dharmas, attains and abides in the first meditation, which is accompanied by thought and examination, and born of seclusion, with joy and pleasure. Having arisen from the first meditation, he enters the second meditation. From the second meditation
