Explanation of the Gradual Abiding Attainments: The Utterly Clear Entrance Explanation of the Gradual Abiding Attainments: The Utterly Clear Entrance Explanation of the Gradual Abiding Attainments: The Utterly Clear Entrance. Homage! Titled "Explanation of the Gradual Abiding Attainments: The Utterly Clear Entrance." I prostrate to the Lama and the Yidam! With the fire of discernment, the firewood of desire, longing, and affliction is utterly burned; then purified with utterly clear water. With the moisture of joy and bliss, the light of mindfulness and awareness thoroughly dries; the net of happiness is cut with the sword of correct view. Gradually eliminating the consciousness of obstructed space and objects, relying on the consciousness that abandons both extremes. By blocking the two roots of strife and samsara, abiding in the supreme abode, I bow to the Supreme Abider. Having transcended the ground without entering into samadhi, all obstructed appearances are thoroughly eliminated. Abiding in the pacification of feeling and perception, I write the explanation of the nine attainments. In the teachings of the Lion of Men, the four dhyanas, the four formless attainments, and the attainment of cessation, the nine gradual abiding attainments, are taught. The first eight are the cause for worldly individuals to attain all happiness beyond desire, and the basis upon which all qualities of those beyond the world rely. The last is to be meditated on again and again by noble individuals for the sake of abiding happily in the present life and for cultivating the power of samadhi. Therefore, this explanation has four meanings: the explanation of the four dhyanas as arising definitively from feeling, the explanation of the four formless attainments as arising definitively from perception, the explanation of the attainment of cessation as arising definitively from both, and the explanation of the difference in the manner of attainment as sudden transcendence. The first has three parts: the manner in which it is explained in the sutras, the manner in which it is elaborated in the treatises, and the manner in which their characteristics are determined. The first is: In the Sutra of the Perfection of Wisdom, it says: "Secluded from desires, secluded from unwholesome dharmas, with initial application and sustained application, born of seclusion, possessing joy and bliss, the first dhyana is closely cultivated and abided in. When initial application and sustained application are pacified, the interior is completely purified, and the mindstream becomes one.

Without conceptualization, without analysis, with joy and bliss born of samadhi, the second dhyana (second meditation) is nearly perfected and dwells. He is free from attachment to joy, dwells in equanimity with mindfulness and awareness, and experiences bliss with the body. The noble ones call him who dwells in mindfulness and bliss with equanimity. The third dhyana (third meditation) without joy is nearly perfected and dwells. He also abandons bliss, also abandons suffering, and since pleasant and unpleasant feelings have previously ceased, there is neither bliss nor suffering. The fourth dhyana (fourth meditation) of pure equanimity and mindfulness is nearly perfected and dwells, so it is said. There are two aspects to this: how the words are explained, and how the meaning is explained. The first is from the Śrāvakabhūmi: The meaning of the previously explained first dhyana sutra, what is called "desire," is of two kinds: desire of affliction and desire of things. What is called "separated from desires" is also of two kinds: separated from what is associated, and separated from the object. What is called "separated from unwholesome dharmas" is born from the cause of desire, such as these near afflictions of unwholesomeness, such as bodily misconduct, verbal misconduct, mental misconduct, holding weapons, holding sticks, fighting, exposing shortcomings, arguing, gambling, deceiving, seducing, having no compassion, lying, all that occurs, these are they. Because they are abandoned, it is said to be separated from unwholesome dharmas. What is called "with conceptualization and analysis" is because one does not regard conceptualization and analysis as faults. The antidote to desire, because it possesses the conceptualization and analysis of its own ground, it is said to be with conceptualization and analysis. What is called "born of separation" is born from the ultimate application of mind that is separated from all desires. What is called "born" means that it is truly born only after that cause and that condition. Therefore, it is said to be born of separation. What is called "with joy and bliss" is that
