If, in a hundred ways, thoughts of joy and delight arise, then only quickly discriminate them with wisdom. Only know them well. Only know them well and abandon all that arises without acceptance. Eliminate, purify, and with the mind in a state of equanimity, therefore it is said to be mindful and aware. The so-called experiencing pleasure with the body means that at that time, the physical body and the mental body separately experience pleasure and the pleasure of extreme suppleness, therefore it is said to experience pleasure with the body. The noble ones say that whoever is mindful, dwells in happiness, and is in a state of equanimity, which means that below the third dhyana, there is no such happiness, nor is there constant dwelling in a state of equanimity. Above the third dhyana, there is equanimity, but there is no such happiness. Thus, because the lower ones do not have happiness and equanimity, and the upper ones do not have happiness, therefore, for example, this third dhyana is their place, so the noble ones also focus on it, because it is the person who abides, so in accordance with it, it is said that whoever is mindful, dwells in happiness, and is in a state of equanimity. The so-called noble ones refer to the Buddhas and the Buddha's Shravakas. The so-called absence of joy means that like that, dwelling in a state of equanimity, at that time, mindfulness and awareness are universally relied upon and familiarized, and due to the cause of repeated familiarization, abandoning the feeling of joy that makes the mind happy, and the antidote to joy, the peace of no joy, and the feeling of extreme peace arise in the mind, therefore it is said to be without joy. The so-called practicing and abiding in the third dhyana should be understood as before. The meaning of the fourth dhyana sutra is that abandoning happiness there means that because it is the same kind of antidote to happiness, without relying on the antidote of abandonment, but abandoning happiness done by its antidote, this itself shows, and what is its antidote? For example, equanimity, mindfulness, and awareness.

Yes. Relying on and familiarizing oneself with those, one progresses from the third dhyana, and since one abandons the happiness of the third dhyana's realm, therefore, it is said, "Happiness is also abandoned." "Previously, suffering was also abandoned, and pleasantness and unpleasantness also ceased," this means that at that time, the meditator has attained the state of completely transcending happiness and suffering. Since what he had previously abandoned and what he is now about to abandon are all gathered together, therefore it is said, "Previously, suffering was also abandoned, and pleasantness and unpleasantness also ceased." Regarding this, when entering the fourth dhyana, happiness is also abandoned. When entering the second dhyana, suffering is abandoned. When entering the third dhyana, pleasantness ceases. When entering the first dhyana, unpleasantness ceases. "Neither happiness nor suffering" means that because he has abandoned those happiness and suffering. Regarding this, the remaining feeling is neither happiness nor suffering, which is close at hand, therefore it is said, "Neither happiness nor suffering." "Equanimity and mindfulness are completely purified" means that at that time, he abandons the faults of the lower levels above the first dhyana, such as: coarse and subtle thought, joy and happiness, inhalation and exhalation will all be abandoned. After abandoning those, the equanimity and mindfulness that he possesses are completely purified and completely cleansed. Therefore, when entering the fourth dhyana, his mind remains unmoving and is free from all movement, therefore it is said, "Equanimity and mindfulness are completely purified." Regarding this, "Having cultivated the fourth dhyana and abiding" means that the previous dhyanas, such as the first dhyana, should also be understood in the same way. The second (explanation of the formless dhyanas) is divided into two: the way it is explained in the Abhidharma, and the way it is explained in the Abhidharmakosa. First: Explaining the formless dhyanas with four ways: all-pervasive afflictions, purification, complete purification, and complete purification by complete purification, the first is:
