Because it is said that superior insight must attain the transcendent path, it is mistaken to assume that both are the mind of absorption, which is crude wisdom. Because in the view of the Mind-Only school, the mind of the peak of existence does not have a basis on which the transcendent path relies, it is impossible for the two to arise simultaneously. Therefore, the feeling and perception that arise in the retinue of the consciousness of mind included in the realm of the peak of existence are taken as the main objects to be severed, and the wisdom corresponding to it is taken as the main agent of severance. When such a consciousness of mind and its retinue are severed, it is established as the cessation absorption. Fourth, with what kind of attention does one enter absorption? The Hearers enter absorption with the attention that abides in the pacification of coarse feelings and perceptions. As the Treasury of Knowledge says, "This is the meaning of abiding," and the Compendium says, "With the attention that is preceded by the idea of abiding in peace." Bodhisattvas enter absorption with the attention that is diligent in practicing absorption and that knows for the benefit of others. As the Conduct of a Bodhisattva says, "There is nothing that the Buddha's children do not learn; there is definitely nothing." Like this. The Buddha only appears to enter absorption in front of others, but in reality, he does not enter absorption. Because if it is the cessation absorption according to this school, then entering absorption necessarily prevents consciousness and its retinue. If the Buddha is a noble one, then he necessarily possesses non-conceptual wisdom and does not interrupt it. Therefore, the explanation of the Ornament of the Sutras and the Yoga Practice Ground say that entering absorption is only in terms of appearing in front of others. In the Ornament and the Compendium, when explaining the Buddha's uncontaminated wisdom, the cessation absorption is not explained, which is precisely because there is no actual absorption. Fifth, how long does one enter absorption? Hearers and solitary realizers enter absorption for as long as the power of wisdom lasts. Bodhisattvas do not enter for more than seven days, as the Essence of the Sun Sutra says, "They enter absorption from one to seven days. If they enter absorption for a long time, the conduct of the Bodhisattva will become inferior." Some people think that Bodhisattvas can enter absorption for a long time, as the Lotus of Compassion Sutra says, "Bodhisattvas who are destined to be reborn once enter the cessation absorption.

With the mind of entering the earth, one can cause these ten intermediate kalpas to pass away. Also, in the Sutra of the Ten Wheels of Ksitigarbha, it is said: The Bodhisattva also at that time thinks, 'I shall hold all dharmas, and with the unreal self, I shall completely and without remainder cut off all dharmas such as the three kinds of feelings and the three kinds of perceptions.' Having thought thus, he enters the cessation samadhi. Having dwelt in this samadhi, he completely cuts off everything as he had previously vowed. He lives on the food of that samadhi. If it is seven days, or fourteen days, or twenty-one days, or twenty-eight days, or thirty-five days, or forty-two days, or forty-nine days, or fifty-six days, if he can dwell for immeasurable, countless hundreds of millions of kalpas, he can dwell, eating the food of that samadhi. Having arisen from that samadhi, his mind does not cling to anything and he dwells. As it is said, it is unreasonable to say so. The Bodhisattva mainly engages for the sake of benefiting others, and this can be accomplished in a short time. If he enters samadhi for a long time, then the Bodhicitta and compassion must also be stopped in the same way, so the conduct of the Bodhisattva will become inferior. If it is said that he does not abandon benefiting others, because entering cessation samadhi is for the sake of benefiting others. If so, then the eighth-ground Bodhisattva, having stopped all elaborations, dwells in that cessation for a long time, the Buddhas should not urge him to arise from samadhi, because that is for the sake of benefiting others, it is the same. Therefore, the meaning of the Karuna Pundarika Sutra refers only to having the ability. Sixth, what is the object to be stopped? It is stopping the seven consciousnesses and their retinue. As the Abhidharmasamuccaya says: 'Among the non-firm and the firm, there is also a partial cessation.' Here, the so-called partial refers to stopping the defiled consciousness, not stopping the undefiled consciousness. Those who assert this have not distinguished the differences in tenets. If so, then at the time of entering cessation samadhi, it must also be admitted that there is a continuum of the mind of entering samadhi. If this is also admitted, then that becomes the samadhi to be stopped, so the Mahayana-samgraha says: 'If it is non-conceptual wisdom, then one does not enter cessation samadhi.'
