Entering into absorption. What is to be eliminated? Examining the differences in essence. First, ordinary beings cannot enter into cessation, because some ordinary beings, although they have attained the special calm abiding, the mind of the peak of existence, have not attained the special insight, the wisdom that directly realizes selflessness. Among the noble ones, the stream-enterer, the once-returner, and the non-returner who has not attained the mind of the peak of existence, cannot enter into it, because although they possess the special insight, the wisdom that directly realizes selflessness, they have not attained the special calm abiding, the mind of the peak of existence. So, what is the reason for needing to attain both of these to attain the absorption of cessation? One must attain the wisdom that directly realizes selflessness, because without it, one cannot eliminate afflictive emotions due to the fear of doubting self-annihilation, and if one does not prevent it, one will not become a supreme abode of the noble ones. Also, one must attain the mind of the peak of existence, because entering into cessation requires stopping coarse feelings and perceptions, and the mind of the peak of existence is one in which the movement of the mind is not clear, so it is easy to stop coarse feelings and perceptions. As the sutra says, "One who enters into cessation should cherish two things: what are the two? Calm abiding and insight." Therefore, having attained the special calm abiding, the mind of the peak of existence, and the special insight, the wisdom that directly realizes selflessness, one enters into this, so non-returners and above must enter into absorption. Second, the absorption of cessation has a basis in the desire and form realms, but not in the formless realm, because self-realizers are definitely based in the desire realm, and bodhisattva noble ones are also definitely based in the desire and form realms. Although hearers have a basis in the formless realm, there is no absorption of cessation in that basis, because the need for hearers to enter into cessation is that they become disgusted with coarse feelings and perceptions, and enter into absorption to pacify them. However, the hearer noble ones of the formless realm are in a state of maturation of peaceful liberation, so they do not become disgusted with coarse feelings and perceptions.
