Because one experiences a serene feeling. Happiness is: The Vaibhashikas consider it to be extreme pliancy, because the Abhidharmakosha says, "Extreme pliancy is happiness." Since it is one of the eleven virtuous mental factors, it belongs to the aggregate of formations. It is unreasonable to consider feeling as happiness, because there is no physical sensation in the state of meditative absorption, and mental sensation has already been established as joy. It is impossible for two distinct substantial feeling mental factors to occur simultaneously in the retinue of one primary consciousness. The Sautrantikas consider it to be physical sensation, because the sutra says, "Happiness is experienced by the body." It is unreasonable to consider the happiness of extreme pliancy, because in the state of the third dhyana, although there is an extreme pliancy that is far superior to the previous one, the limbs are not abandoned. If the Vaibhashikas argue that in the third dhyana, that extreme pliancy has been destroyed by equanimity, so there is no fault, that is also unreasonable, because equanimity causes that extreme pliancy to increase more and more. The Chittamatrins consider it to be mental happiness, because the Determination of Meaning Compendium says: The serene feeling that arises in the retinue of mental consciousness is said to be joy from the perspective of benefiting the mental consciousness and its retinue, and happiness from the perspective of benefiting the sense consciousness and its retinue. Also, the Ratnamegha Sutra says: From the perspective of benefiting the entering consciousness and its retinue, it is joy; from the perspective of benefiting the alaya-consciousness and its retinue, it is happiness. Mindfulness, which is a limb of the third [dhyana], is the mental factor that holds the object without forgetting it, in order to prevent joy from arising. Vigilance is the mental factor that discerns whether joy has arisen or not, and if it has arisen, quickly abandons it. Equanimity is the equanimity of formations that causes the mind to abide for a long time, and it is not a feeling. The limb of the third [dhyana], happiness, is: The Sautrantikas consider it to be physical sensation, because the sutra says, "Happiness is experienced by the body." The Vaibhashikas and Chittamatrins consider it to be mental sensation, because the Vaibhashikas consider the continuation of the previous joy to be merely the absence of attachment to joy.

Because the Mind-Only school considers it a continuation of previous bliss. The equanimity that is a limb of the fourth dhyana is the active equanimity that abides in the mind stream. Mindfulness is the mental factor that holds the object without forgetting its aspects, in order to prevent the arising of pleasure. So, since mindfulness and equanimity are mentioned as limbs, why isn't vigilance mentioned? Because vigilance distinguishes whether or not unfavorable factors have arisen, and if they have, it quickly abandons them. But the fourth dhyana is liberated from the eight faults of dhyana, so it doesn't need to distinguish whether or not unfavorable factors have arisen, so it wasn't mentioned. If you think that mindfulness is the same, that's not right. Mindfulness only prevents unfavorable factors from arising, and this is also needed in the stage of counteracting gaps. But distinguishing whether or not unfavorable factors have arisen is not needed in the stage where it is impossible for unfavorable factors to arise. So, why aren't mindfulness, vigilance, and equanimity mentioned as limbs in the first dhyana? Because conceptualization and analysis obviously disturb it, so it is not suitable as an antidote. In the second dhyana, although it is suitable as an antidote, it is not called by its own name, because joy has not separated from the pervasive affliction of defilement, so it cannot be called by its own name. In the third dhyana, there is a reason to call it by its own name, because joy has separated from the pervasive affliction of defilement, so it can be called by its own name. In the fourth dhyana, there is a reason to call mindfulness and equanimity pure, because they have been liberated from the eight faults of dhyana. The samadhi of all four dhyanas is the mental factor of single-pointedness of mind. Second, from the perspective of essence, there are three types: defiled samadhi, the pure one, and the uncontaminated. The first has two aspects: definition and classification. The first, some say, the definition of defiled dhyana is: the single-pointedness of mind that is bound by the afflictions of its own ground, included in the ground of dhyana, and the associated (mental factors). If this is said, then the actual samadhi of dhyana in the continuum of ordinary beings, the pure one, has the property of...
