Accompanied by investigation and analysis, which are contained within its own nature as an antidote to desire. Solitude is the sixth mental activity that becomes the antidote to desire, and because it arises immediately after it, it is called 'born of solitude.' Joy arises because the meaning of desire is temporarily attained. Possessing great physical and mental fitness is called 'possessing bliss,' which is a branch of benefit. Contemplation is accompanied by and corresponds to samadhi. The first is the first to move away from desire. Near attainment is newly accomplished by relying on proximity. Abiding is to repeatedly enter into equipoise later on. Therefore, it is the characteristic of the actual basis of the first contemplation. Whichever of investigation or analysis is a branch of the antidote, whatever single-pointedness of mind is distinguished by being free from attachment to desire, accompanied by correspondence, whatever joy and bliss are born of solitude, is possessed of a branch of benefit. In order to abandon the pervasiveness of the Buddha's ground and path, the equipoise of the actual basis abiding in its category is added, and the lower ones should also be understood in the same way. The meaning of 'whichever of investigation or analysis' is that the actual basis of the first contemplation has two types: the mere actual basis and the differentiated one, distinguished by whether its own coarse branch is abandoned or not. In the case of the mere actual basis, both investigation and analysis are present, but in the case of the differentiated actual basis, there is no investigation, only analysis is present, so it is said in that way. The actual basis of the second contemplation, the meaning spoken of in the Perfection of Wisdom Sutra, the way it is explained in the Hearer's Ground is: 'When all discrimination and all examination are nearly pacified,' which means that the samadhi accompanied by investigation and analysis is unstable, so it is separated from it and enters into the stable samadhi that has abandoned investigation and analysis. 'Inwardly completely clear' means that it makes the mind peaceful and clear. 'Because the continuum of the mind has become one' means that meditation has become natural, so investigation and analysis cannot interrupt it. 'Without investigation and without analysis' means that it has abandoned them. Samadhi is the sixth mental activity that causes detachment from desire in the first contemplation, and 'born from it' means that it arises immediately after it. The meaning of joy and so on is the same as before. Therefore, it is the second contemplation.

The characteristic of the actual absorption of the ground is: the mind that is extremely pure internally, distinguished by being free from attachment to investigation by means of the limbs of the antidote, and being one-pointed, together with its equivalents, and possessing the joy and happiness born from samadhi as a limb of benefit. The way to explain the meaning of the third dhyana's actual ground as stated in the Perfection of Wisdom Sutra from the Hearer's Ground is: "That which is free from attachment to joy" means to see its characteristics as faults. "Remaining in equanimity" means that the mind continuously remains in equanimity, without the obstacles of the first dhyana's investigation and analysis and the second dhyana's joy, so it continuously remains in equanimity. The meaning of "mindfulness and awareness" is: when the mind continuously remains in equanimity, mindfulness is established nearby in order to prevent the arising of the thought of joy; when the thought of joy arises on the hundred paths due to forgetfulness, it is individually discerned and abandoned by awareness. The meaning of "experiencing pleasure of the body" is: the physical body experiences the feeling of pleasure, and the mental body experiences the pleasure of extreme pliancy. The meaning of "the noble ones say" etc. is: there is no such pleasure below the second dhyana, nor is there continuous remaining in equanimity; although there is equanimity above the fourth dhyana, there is no such pleasure, so only the third dhyana is spoken of in this way by the noble ones. The noble ones are the Buddhas and the Hearers of the Buddhas. "Without joy" means that the feeling of joy is abandoned by the power of mindfulness and awareness. The meaning of "third dhyana" and below is as before. Therefore, the characteristic of the actual absorption of the third dhyana is: the mind that is extremely distinguished by being free from attachment to joy by means of the three limbs of the antidote, mindfulness, awareness, and equanimity, and being one-pointed, together with its equivalents, and possessing the happiness of the mind that has abandoned joy as a limb of benefit. The way to explain the meaning of the fourth dhyana's actual ground as stated in the Perfection of Wisdom Sutra from the Hearer's Ground is: "That which has also abandoned pleasure" means that the pleasure that has become a limb of the third dhyana is abandoned right now. Suffering and mental pleasure and displeasure previously
