Because it is not separated from the lower realm, and it is the path of detachment from desire. It is said that it is not possessed as if tasting a flavor. Second, just as the main practice has three types: afflicted, pure, and uncontaminated, do the preparatory practices also have these? Answer: The preparatory practices do not have the afflicted, because the preparatory practice is the path of detachment from desire, and the afflicted cannot detach from desire. The preparatory practice of the first dhyana has two types: pure and uncontaminated, but the remaining preparatory practices do not have the uncontaminated, because the preparatory practices of the second dhyana and above do not rely on the wisdom that directly realizes selflessness. Without obtaining the main practice of the lower realm, one cannot obtain the preparatory practice of the upper realm. If one obtains the main practice of the lower realm, the preparatory practice of the upper realm does not rely on the wisdom that directly realizes selflessness, because the main practice is the union of calm abiding and insight, so the path is easy, and the preparatory practice has more of the insight component, so the path is difficult. If one thinks that the preparatory practice of the first dhyana is also the same in not relying, the answer is: although the preparatory practice of the first dhyana does not rely on perfect knowledge of characteristics and so on, as mentioned before, it relies on the calm abiding before that. If one thinks that the preparatory practice of the second dhyana also needs a calm abiding included in the second dhyana before the perfect knowledge of characteristics, the answer is: it is not the same, because the mind of equipoise needed before that is the main practice of the first dhyana. Therefore, the remaining seven preparatory practices are only pure. Third, do the preparatory practices have the path of detachment from desire, the path of manifesting qualities, and the path of dwelling in bliss in this life? Answer: There is only the path of detachment from desire, there is no path of manifesting qualities, because it does not have the limbs, so it cannot manifest qualities such as the eye and supernormal powers. There is also no path of dwelling in bliss in this life, because it has the effort of abandoning unfavorable factors. With these classifications of the preparatory practice of the first dhyana, the second dhyana

The approximations from there up to the peak of existence should also be understood. As it says in the Śrāvakabhūmi: Just as one enters the first dhyāna with seven types of attention, so too, it should be understood that entering the second, third, and fourth dhyānas, as well as entering the sphere of infinite space, infinite consciousness, nothingness, and neither perception nor non-perception, is also done with seven types of attention. However, the first type of attention, which is not a mixture of hearing and thinking, is done by meditating on the basis of desire. The aspect of peace and coarseness is seeing the faults of the lower grounds as coarse and seeing the qualities of the higher grounds as peaceful. As it says in the Mahāyāna-sūtra: The characteristic of coarseness is all the lower grounds, up to the sphere of nothingness. In short, it should be understood as having two aspects: being extremely painful and extremely short-lived due to not being completely pacified. Conversely, the higher grounds should be understood as the characteristic of peace. Third, the nature of what is to be attained has six aspects: nature, classification, definite number, opposing factors, examination of differences, and examination of the object and aspect. First, it is the characteristic of the actual absorption of dhyāna, the single-pointedness of mind, along with its concomitants, distinguished by the difference of definitely arising from the lower grounds in terms of feeling, which is included in the actual absorption. Second, there are two types: classification in terms of grounds and classification in terms of nature. The first has two types: the individual nature and the establishment of the limbs. The first has four types: the actual basis of the first dhyāna, the meaning spoken of in the Perfection of Wisdom Sutra, and the way it is explained in the Śrāvakabhūmi: Desire has two types: afflicted desire and desire for objects. The first is desire with longing and harm. The latter is the five desirable qualities such as form. Being separated from that also has two types: the former is being separated from the concomitants, and the latter is being separated from the object. Sinful, unwholesome dharmas are the misdeeds of body, speech, and mind that arise from the cause of those desires, and being separated from that is abandoning the cause of desire, so that the result of misdeeds will not arise again. Having investigation and analysis is not seeing that as a fault.
