The meaning of "abandoning the west" is: abandoning unpleasantness from the first dhyana, abandoning suffering from the second dhyana, and abandoning pleasantness from the third dhyana. The so-called "neither pleasure nor pain" means that only equanimity exists as a beneficial limb in feeling. Equanimity and mindfulness are limbs of antidotes, and the reason for saying "completely pure" is because it is liberated from the eight faults of dhyana. This equanimity is the equanimity of formation. The rest are the same as before. Therefore, the characteristic of the actual absorption of the fourth dhyana is: with mindfulness and equanimity as correct antidotal limbs, it is associated with a one-pointed mind that is extremely separated from attachment to pleasure, and the feeling of equanimity exists as a beneficial limb. Second, there are three types of limb classification: the difference of limbs, the way of becoming limbs, and the nature of each limb. First: In the Compendium, it says: The first dhyana has five limbs, and the five limbs are: investigation, analysis, joy, happiness, and one-pointedness of mind. The second has four limbs, and the four limbs are: inner purity, joy, happiness, and one-pointedness of mind. The third has five limbs, and the five limbs are: mindfulness, vigilance, equanimity, happiness, and one-pointedness of mind. The fourth has four limbs, and the four limbs are: completely pure equanimity, completely pure mindfulness, feeling of neither pleasure nor pain, and one-pointedness of mind. It is also said in the Treasury of Knowledge, and the scripture has been quoted before. Second: The investigation and analysis of the first dhyana, the inner purity of the second dhyana, the mindfulness, vigilance, and equanimity of the third dhyana, and the completely pure mindfulness and completely pure equanimity of the fourth dhyana are all antidotal limbs of their own, because they are the path to separate from attachment to their respective lower grounds. If someone asks: During the actual practice, because one has already separated from attachment to the lower ground, it is not suitable as an antidote. There is no fault, because during the actual practice, it acts as an antidote to prolong the lower ground, and in the near-attainment stage, it acts as an antidote to separate from attachment to the lower ground.

It is because of the actual practice. The joy and happiness of the first two dhyanas, the happiness of the third dhyana, and the feeling of equanimity of the fourth dhyana are the limbs of benefit, because they are obtained by the power of abandoning desire in their respective lower grounds, and because they make the body and mind of the person who abides in dhyana happy. The samadhi of all four is the limb of abiding, because both the limb of antidote and the limb of benefit mentioned earlier depend on it. As it is said: In the son of the king, by whose power, even though there are other dharmas, only seeking and so on are established as the limbs of the dhyanas? Only this can perfect the limbs of antidote, benefit, and the abiding of both. In the first dhyana, seeking and investigation are the limbs of antidote, because they can abandon seeking of desire, anger, and harm, and so on. Joy and happiness are the limbs of benefit, because the two seekers and investigators have countered the unfavorable qualities, and thus the joy and happiness arising from separation are obtained. One-pointedness of mind is the limb of abiding of both, because it is said that seeking and so on arise by relying on the power of samadhi. Similarly, it should be applied and said to the second dhyana and so on. Third, the seeking that becomes a limb of the first dhyana is the mental arising that observes the coarse aspect of desire and the peaceful aspect of the first dhyana. Investigation is the mental arising that carefully examines the amount of affliction and the length of life, etc., after that. The inner purity of the second is considered by the Vaibhashikas to be the faith that definitely arises from the ground of dhyana, as it is said in the Treasury: Inner purity is faith. The Mind-Only School considers it to be the three: mindfulness, awareness, and equanimity, as it is said in the Determination Collection: The nature of inner purity is mindfulness, awareness, and equanimity. The first dhyana is not mentioned because mindfulness, awareness, and equanimity are disturbed by seeking and investigation. The limb of joy of the first two dhyanas is a mental feeling, which arises in the retinue of the consciousness of the mind.
