Entering the fruit or the once-returner's fruit, whichever fruit is entered, at that time one abides in that fruit, so it is said. The meaning of those is that the Hearers with dull faculties who abide in the fifteen moments of the path of seeing are placed as faith-followers, and those with sharp faculties are placed as dharma-followers, so these two followers are definitely only abiding in the path of seeing. Among them, from not abandoning even a little of the abandonment of desire realm meditation, to abandoning the fifth, and definitely abandoning the sixth, and definitely abandoning the ninth, there are three. The first is the stream-enterer's path, the second is the once-returner's path, and the third is the non-returner's path. The Tibetans have given the term "foregoing detachment" to these latter two. The two paths of foregoing detachment are explained together with the stream-enterer's path. The two fruits are explained together with the stream-enterer's fruit, because the stages of the path are the same, and for the sake of concise terminology, both the upper and lower Abhidharma seem to have consistent explanations. Second, abiding in the path of meditation has two aspects: establishing it through the three previous paths of entry, and establishing it through gradually abandoning the abandonment of meditation after obtaining the path of seeing. The first is, whoever enters whichever, the sixteenth is the fruit, at that time the faculties are sharp or dull, attained through faith-resolve and seeing. So it is said. In its commentary, it says, if the sixteenth mind arises, those two are not called faith-followers or dharma-followers, nor are they called paths of entry. What are they then? They are those who abide in the fruit, whoever enters the stream-enterer's fruit, or the once-returner's fruit, or the non-returner's fruit, whichever fruit is entered, at that time one abides in that fruit. The Arhat himself cannot be attained initially, because the path of seeing does not abandon what should be abandoned by the meditation, and it is also impossible to be detached from desire from the peak of existence. At that time the faculties are sharp or dull, attained through faith-resolve and seeing. At that time, the dull faculty who was previously a faith-follower is called faith-resolve. The sharp faculty who was previously a dharma-

That which is called "obtained by seeing" is because faith and wisdom are superior, and because they are well distinguished by faith and seeing. So it is said. The meaning of those is that the previous three types of stream-enterers, when they attain the sixteen realizations, become the fruit positions of that and that. At that time, the two types of faculties, sharp and dull, are not called the two followers of faith-understanding and seeing-obtained, because the truth has already been seen. Therefore, the two types of faculties, sharp and dull, are the actual meaning, so they exist in all three stages of the path of seeing, cultivation, and no-more-learning. And the two followers, the two of faith-understanding and seeing-obtained, and the two of time-appropriate and time-inappropriate, are the views of this school to establish each of the three paths of seeing, cultivation, and no-more-learning separately. Secondly, there are four: the fruit position of stream-enterer, the position of once-returner, the position of non-returner, and the stream-enterer of Arhat. The first has two types: the one with seven existences, and the one born from lineage. The first is, in the Abhidharmakośa, "The fruit position is not only abandoned by cultivation, but if desired, one attains the seven existences." And in its commentary, it says, "Thus, all nine types of afflictions are not only abandoned by cultivation in the fruit position, but if desired, one attains the seven existences. One who abides in the fruit and has not abandoned even one of the afflictions to be abandoned by cultivation is a stream-enterer, and because he is born in seven lifetimes, he is the one with seven existences. Among all, he is not the one with seven existences, so it is said that if desired, one attains it, which is the worst of all. The sutra says, 'If one attains the supreme, then the one with seven existences,' which is a synonym for 'attaining the supreme, one is born seven times,' the word 'supreme' means extremely. The stream of Nirvana is the path, because one goes from there to there. This one has entered there and has reached it, so he is a stream-enterer. How is one a stream-enterer? If it is said that it is because one has obtained the first path, then one would also become the eighth. If it is said that it is because one has obtained the first fruit, then most would also become free from desire, and the one free from desire would also become free from desire. In the case of obtaining all fruits, it is because one has obtained the first fruit. Why is it only that, and not the eighth? There is subsequent knowledge of the path.

It is for entering and attaining the path of fruition, for attaining the path of seeing and meditation, and for completely realizing all streams. The Vaibhashikas say: That is, from that, seven existences of birth and seven intermediate existences connect the continuum among humans, and similarly connect the continuum among gods. Thus, the continuum is connected between twenty-eight existences. Because seven existences are similar as a group, if one is extremely attached, it is said to be the seventh time, just like being skilled in the seven places and the seven petals. They say this. Then, if the sutra says that a person with complete view, the eighth existence manifests and is accomplished, that is not a place, and there is no opportunity, this is not a place, what is this about? It refers to one type of being. Then, if it is understood according to the literal meaning, then the intermediate existence also does not exist. Even so, until the peak of existence, wherever one transmigrates, it will not become the eighth existence born as one type of being, what is this about? It is said considering the desire realm, so there is no fault. Regarding this, what sutra or reasoning can be understood, that one is born seven times each among gods and humans, and not seven times in both? Regarding this statement, what can be understood? If it is said that seven times appear among gods and humans, then the Kashyapīyas also separately say seven times in the heavens and seven times in humans, so do not be too attached to this. If someone enters the stream among humans, then he will come here and be completely liberated from suffering. If someone enters the stream among the gods, then he will come here and be completely liberated from suffering. Why will the eighth existence not manifest and be accomplished? Because during that time, karma will not devour, and the continuum will be completely matured. That path is like that, just like a snake being trapped by the seventh step, just like a four-day fever. The seven latent tendencies, corresponding to the last two parts, and corresponding to the above five parts, are also because they are left behind. In the meantime, the noble path is also manifested, and
