Because it is said in the scriptures that when practicing in the desire realm, one becomes a non-returner by abandoning all that should be abandoned through practice. Furthermore, if one acknowledges that the continuum of a non-returner has nine unobstructed paths that abandon the nine afflictions of the desire realm, this is very detrimental to the establishment of the state of a stream-enterer, so they say. These views seem to be expressed after contemplating the meaning of the scriptures, but they do not seem to grasp the root. Because according to the Mind-Only school, the main aspect of the ripened aggregates of karma from previous lives is the alaya-consciousness and its retinue, therefore, the alaya-consciousness in the continuum of a non-returner who has a basis in the desire realm is the ripened result of the karma that propels one into the desire realm, so it must be acknowledged as being included in the desire realm. This is because karma from other realms does not propel the ripened aggregates of other realms. Therefore, it must also be acknowledged that the afflicted mind in such a continuum is also included in the desire realm, because it is impossible for an afflicted mind from another realm to grasp onto the ripened aggregates of another realm as self. Think carefully! According to your view, if the afflicted mind included in the desire realm is also divided into nine, and it is acknowledged that they are abandoned sequentially by the unobstructed paths that abandon the nine afflictions of the desire realm, this contradicts the treatises of Asanga. In the *Compendium of Determinations*, it says, "It should be understood that these (afflictions) are abandoned simultaneously only by separating from attachment to the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. For example, it is not like abandoning other afflictions gradually." Therefore, saying that if the nine afflictions of the desire realm are abandoned, it pervades the abandonment of the afflicted mind included in the desire realm, and if the continuum of a non-returner who has a basis in the desire realm has an afflicted mind included in the desire realm, then it must be acknowledged that the continuum of a non-returner has nine unobstructed paths that abandon the nine afflictions of the desire realm, all these statements should be understood as irrelevant. Does the continuum of a non-returner who has a basis in the desire realm have an afflicted mind or not? If it does, then it must be acknowledged that it is included in the upper realms. Therefore, in the *Compendium of Topics*, it says, "These afflictions are the afflictions of the realm in which the body is born."

it is contradictory. If not, then from that very thing, seeing the four learners, if the path beyond the world is manifested, it will not arise. Arising from that, then everything will arise, because of extreme discrimination and because it has not been abandoned. Saying this is contradictory. The meaning of the quote from the root commentary of the Thirty Verses is that afflicted mind shows that one's own retinue, realm, and ground are the same. However, that very quote establishes that wherever the body is born, it belongs to that place. The four uncommon retinue members focus on the alaya-vijnana (store consciousness) as their object, and their aspects are viewing self, thinking 'I am,' being attached to self, and being deluded about self. At that time, the alaya-vijnana is of the ground where the body is born, because that is the tenet of the Mind-Only school. Otherwise, by viewing the destructible aggregate included in the higher realm, one would have to assert that it focuses on the aggregates included in the desire realm, which contradicts the Abhidharma tenets. The crucial point is this: if one does not accept the afflicted mind, if one is a non-returner, although there is no contradiction in asserting that it pervades the abandonment of the afflictions included in the desire realm, when one accepts it, one has abandoned the ninth affliction of the desire realm, and one asserts that it pervades being free from attachment to desire. However, it is not permissible to assert that it pervades the complete abandonment of the afflictions included in the desire realm, because the Determination Collection says: The mind is these four ever-present afflictions, such as the view of the destructible aggregate of self-grasping and the grasping of 'I,' as well as the pride of 'I am,' attachment to self, and unmingled ignorance, together with similar objects. Those afflictions also do not contradict virtuous, non-virtuous, and unspecified consciousness, and the obscurations are unspecified and ever-present. Other than that, it should be understood that the conceptualizations enter according to how the conditions are. The worldly path is not an antidote that weakens those four ever-present afflictions that go everywhere, because they also arise for those who are free from attachment. Those afflictions are of the very place where the body is born, for those who are free from attachment.
