Me, because it would lead to having to establish both form near-attainment and formless near-attainment for returners as well. Fifth, the characteristic and classification of body manifestor, of the two. The first is: a non-returner who has attained the result, who has attained cessation attainment. Second, the classification has: those who have attained the path of seeing, whose body basis has not been abandoned, and those who have abandoned it. The first is: it is definitely the basis of the desire realm. The latter has two types: those with a form realm basis and those with a formless realm basis. It is said in the context of cessation attainment that there are those who, having attained cessation attainment in the desire realm basis, fall from detachment from the form realm and take birth in the form realm. It seems that one must also acknowledge that the same being is born again in the formless realm. Even if it is not assumed that way, there must definitely be those with a formless realm basis, because the body manifestor of those with a desire realm basis, without falling from detachment from anything up to the realm of nothingness, can only die and be reborn in the peak of existence. Therefore, in the Treasury, the explanation of form near-attainment, formless near-attainment, visible dharma peace, life completely changed, and body manifestor in order is that the first three are those who have attained the path of seeing and whose body basis has not been abandoned, the fourth is those who have attained the path of seeing and whose body basis has been abandoned, and the fifth is explained by assuming that both exist. Therefore, it is appropriate to follow the way of speaking according to the order of the great treatises, but nowadays, good explanations do not come from the mouths of children who have more eye-catching things than ear-catching things. Third, examining doubts about difficult points, there are three: examining doubts about the method of classification, examining doubts about the meaning of the term "non-returner," and examining doubts about the afflictions to be abandoned. The first is: in the Sutra of Dharma Abhidharma, the Ornament of Clear Realization, and the upper and lower Abhidharma, in the context of form near-attainment, the three of birth, death, and intermediate death are established as the root classification, and the way of classifying them into five by counting each of intermediate death and upper transference requires examining doubts, which has already been discussed in the previous section on resolving doubts in the commentary. The second is: here, some say that because they do not return in the desire realm, they are called non-returners. This explanation of the term is a mistake of intelligence, because that very place of birth above, and below it, do not return.

Therefore, an explanation of the term "Non-returner" is needed. As the commentary on the Abhidharmakośa states: "A Non-returner is one who never manifests a second life in the very realm of their birth, but rather goes to a superior place. Thus, their state of Non-returning is complete, because they do not return to the place where they were born." So it is said. Thirdly, some say: If one is a Non-returner, then they have completely abandoned all afflictions included in the desire realm, which is accepted by both the upper and lower Abhidharma schools. However, others assert that a Non-returner with a basis in the desire realm has not completely abandoned the afflictions included in the desire realm, because they have not abandoned the afflictive intention included in the desire realm. As the Thirty Verses state: "Wherever one is born, that is where it is." In saying this, the meaning of that scripture is not that the afflictive intention in the continuum of a person with a basis in the desire realm belongs to the desire realm, but rather that the afflictive intention is in the same retinue, realm, and ground as itself. In its commentary, Vasubandhu asks: "Is it associated with what is the same as one's own ground, or is it not known whether it is associated with what is the same as another's ground?" Therefore, it is said, "Wherever one is born, that is where it is," meaning that wherever one is born, that is where it arises. The term "that" refers to being associated with what is the same as the realm and ground in which one is born, and not with other realms and other grounds. So it is explained. Otherwise, for a Non-returner who has a basis in the desire realm and is detached from desire even up to the Peak of Existence, it would follow that there is manifest desire-affliction in your continuum, because there is manifest desire-realm afflictive intention in your continuum. This cannot be accepted, because even up to the Peak of Existence, one is detached from desire. Furthermore, if one is a Non-returner, then if it is pervasive that one has abandoned the ninth level of desire-affliction, it is contradictory that one has not abandoned the desire-realm afflictive intention. If it is not pervasive, then it would follow that the number of categories of desire-affliction is not fixed at nine. If one is a Non-returner, then it is not the doctrine of the upper and lower Abhidharma schools that one has not pervasively abandoned all the afflictions included in the desire realm. As the Compendium of Topics states: "Who is a Non-returner? It is a person who abides on the path of having abandoned the nine types of afflictions that operate in the desire realm."
