Here, it is unreasonable to include "gradual return" as part of the definition, because the previous returner's fruit position, which has abandoned desire, also gradually enters the non-returner. Some people think that if the returner's fruit position, after abandoning the sixth level of desire realm afflictions, strives on the path to obtain the non-returner's fruit, then merely the previous returner's fruit position that has abandoned desire is uncertain. The self-view is that the returner's fruit position strives on the path to obtain the non-returner's fruit after obtaining the returner's fruit. Fourth, in terms of classification, there are three from the perspective of abandonment, ten from the perspective of realization, and two from the perspective of faculties, namely faith-understanding and vision-attainment, which should be understood by referring to the former. Second, there are four types of gradual non-returner's fruit position. First, the difference in abandonment is that the ninth level of desire realm afflictions has been abandoned, but the ninth level of the peak of existence afflictions has not been abandoned. Second, the difference in realization is that the liberation path of abandoning the ninth level of desire realm afflictions has been attained, but the liberation path of abandoning the ninth level of the peak of existence afflictions has not been attained. Third, the definition is that it is the fruit position of the Hearer-learner who has abandoned the ninth level of desire realm afflictions after attaining the path of seeing. Fourth, in terms of classification, there are seven classification methods as before. First, from the perspective of abandonment, the ninth level of desire realm afflictions has been abandoned, and each of the seven from the first dhyana to the realm of nothingness also has nine levels, and the afflictions from the first to the eighth level of the peak of existence have been abandoned, totaling seventy-two types. Second, from the perspective of realization, there are two types: abiding in the liberation path of abandoning the ninth level of desire realm afflictions, and abiding in its subsequent attainment. From the first affliction of the first dhyana to the eighth level of the peak of existence, each also has four types: the path of application, the path of non-obstruction, the path of liberation, and abiding in its subsequent attainment, totaling two hundred and eighty-four types. There are two types: abiding in the path of application for abandoning the ninth level of the peak of existence afflictions, and abiding in the path of non-obstruction, totaling two hundred and eighty-eight types. Third, classification from the perspective of faculties, fourth, classification from the perspective of lineage, fifth, classification from the perspective of diligence and non-diligence on the path, as before. Sixth, classification from the perspective of the basis, there are nine types of desire realm basis, the form realm's

Seventeen are the supports of the intermediate state, seventeen are the supports of the birth state, and four are the supports of the formless state, making forty-seven in total. If the formless realm has no intermediate state, and therefore no supports, then why is there no non-returner among the supports of the desire realm intermediate state? The reason is that a person who has attained the fruit of non-returning does not accomplish the desire realm intermediate state, and also the support of the desire realm intermediate state does not newly attain the fruit of non-returning. If the support of the desire realm intermediate state were to newly attain the fruit of non-returning, then that intermediate state would have to manifest the fruit of Arhat in the state of existence, but the desire realm intermediate state does not manifest the fruit of Arhat. The former is established because a non-returner does not take birth in the desire realm. The latter is established because for the support of the desire realm intermediate state to manifest the fruit of Arhat, it would be necessary to transcend all three realms, abandon both afflictions that are unwholesome and those that are neutral, and attain two or three fruits through the path of a renunciate, and many such things would have to be done, but these are impossible to accomplish on the support of any intermediate state. The meaning of those is that if it is a noble being who is a support of the desire realm intermediate state, they must be either a stream-enterer or a once-returner, and the two at the peak of existence are neutral, and other afflictions included in the desire realm are unwholesome, so these must be abandoned. The stream-enterer needs to attain three fruits of the path of a renunciate, and the once-returner needs to attain two fruits. There is a non-returner among the supports of the form realm intermediate state because one who has attained the fruit of non-returning in the desire realm takes birth in the form realm, but one does not newly attain the fruit of non-returning in the support of the form realm intermediate state, because a person who has not separated from desire and attachment in the desire realm does not take birth in the form realm. The fruit of Arhat can be attained in the support of the form realm intermediate state, because if it is a noble being who is its support, it is not necessary to transcend all three realms, and it is not necessary to abandon afflictions that are unwholesome.
