It is unreasonable to say that the seventh existence takes seven human rebirths, because this is also accepted by the Sautrāntikas themselves as the view of the Kāśyapīyas. According to our own system, the one with a divine basis first has three divine existences, then three human existences, and finally attains nirvāṇa with a divine basis. The same applies to the human basis. Secondly, regarding the transition from one lineage to another, there are two ways of explaining it: the way it is explained in the root text and commentary of the Abhidharmakośa, and the way it is explained in the commentary. The first has four aspects: what is abandoned, what is realized, the difference in the way of taking rebirth, and the characteristics. The first is that one goes from three categories to four categories, meaning that one must abandon the third of the three stages of abandonment in the desire realm. If one does not abandon it, one may take rebirth in the four existences, so the difference in rebirth is not established. The fourth can be abandoned or not abandoned as appropriate, and the fifth must be one that was not previously abandoned and is not abandoned in this lifetime. If the fifth is abandoned, the sixth will also be abandoned in this lifetime, so it will become a once-returner. This is because if one abandons the sixth affliction of desire, one will know that one has newly obtained the fruit of a śrāmaṇa, and will joyfully enter. One aspect of the afflictions of desire cannot prevent the attainment of the fruit of a once-returner in this lifetime, because attaining the fruit of a once-returner does not require transcending the realm. It is not the same for the non-returner, because this requires transcending the realm, so one aspect of the afflictions of desire can prevent the attainment of the fruit of a non-returner in this lifetime. The second is that one must obtain a counteragent to whatever is to be abandoned—an undefiled faculty—otherwise the difference in faculties is not established. Although the difference in faculties is not mentioned in the root text, if a stream-enterer abandons later afflictions with the path of seeing, then the attainment of its counteragent—an undefiled faculty—is actually established. Here, some scholars state as evidence that if one does not obtain an undefiled faculty, the abandonment of defiled things may be lost, so the difference in rebirth is not established. This is not found in the commentary of the Abhidharmakośa, nor is it the system of the Vaibhāṣikas, because according to their system, even if one obtains an undefiled faculty, the abandonment may be lost, so it follows that the difference in rebirth is not established.

It is for this reason. Therefore, after attaining the path of seeing, whether one abandons afflictions with the mundane path or the supramundane path, it is considered that one attains the power of the uncontaminated. It is like having the power of an eagle's wings on the wings of a crow. The third is, liberation from the three or four kinds. From family to family in two or three lifetimes, it means that one has abandoned the third category of desire realm afflictions, and has not abandoned the fourth category, so he will take three similar existences in the desire realm, because of the fourth category he takes one, because of the fifth, sixth, and seventh categories he takes one, because of the eighth and ninth categories he takes one. The first is established, because there is death and rebirth between abandoning the fourth category of desire realm afflictions and not abandoning the fifth category. The middle three take one, not each one takes one, because if the fifth category is abandoned, the sixth category will be abandoned in the same lifetime, and it will become a once-returner, and if one is born in the desire realm later as a once-returner, then the seventh category of desire realm afflictions must be either previously abandoned or later abandoned. The last two take one existence in the desire realm, because there is death and rebirth between abandoning the seventh category and not abandoning the eighth category. Then will each of the last two also take one existence, because there is death and rebirth between abandoning the eighth category and not abandoning the ninth category? There is no fault, because at that time, on the body basis of attaining the fruit of a once-returner, one must abandon the eighth category, so the fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth categories all take one existence. There is no confusion. One who is born from family to family after abandoning the fourth category of desire realm afflictions, he will take two existences in the desire realm, the fifth, sixth, and seventh categories take one existence, the last two take one existence, or the eighth category and above take one existence, and then the ninth category takes one existence. Third, regarding the definition, some ask: What is a stream-enterer who has special qualities, who takes two or three existences in the desire realm in a similar way and then manifests nirvana? Answer: A stream-enterer who has special qualities, who has the concept of seven existences beforehand, and who is certain to take two or three existences in the desire realm in a similar way, the dharma, is the object to be explained, because it is the reason for that definition.
