There are two types of fruition: the sudden transcendence and the gradual. That is, obtaining the once-returner or non-returner fruition without having obtained the stream-enterer fruition, and obtaining all four fruitions gradually. Of these, the first is the prior attainment of detachment, and the second is the gradual one. If these are explained in order, there are three explanations: the explanation of the prior attainment of detachment, the explanation of the gradual attainment, and the explanation of the simultaneous attainment. The first of these has two aspects: establishing the fruition of the prior attainment of detachment, and establishing the nature of the prior attainment of detachment in that which is established. Regarding the first, some scholars say: there are stream-enterers and arhats who have prior attainment of detachment, because there are stream-enterers who have abandoned the fifth level of desire realm afflictions before the path of seeing, and there are arhats who have abandoned afflictions up to and including the realm of nothingness before the path of seeing. There are no stream-enterers with prior attainment of detachment and no arhats with prior attainment of detachment, because before the path of seeing, they have not abandoned the main obstacle to the fruition of stream-entry, which is the afflictions to be abandoned by seeing, and the main obstacle to the fruition of arhatship, which is the ninth level of existence afflictions. The scripture says: "If what is to be abandoned by meditation is not abandoned, one does not enter the first fruition, having destroyed the five intervening obstacles," which is established by the root text and commentary. This is not reasonable, because in general, merely abandoning a portion of what is to be abandoned by meditation before the path of seeing does not establish one as having prior attainment of detachment, but rather one is established as having prior attainment of detachment when one has abandoned the main obstacle to obtaining the fruition in which one abides before the path of seeing. Therefore, a stream-enterer abiding in the fruition who has abandoned the fifth level of desire realm afflictions before the path of seeing, the dharma, should not be a prior attainment of detachment, because they have not abandoned the main obstacle to obtaining the fruition in which they abide before the path of seeing. Similarly, this should also be applied to arhats. Furthermore, if the fruition in which one abides is one in which the afflictions to be abandoned by seeing of the higher and lower realms, which are the aspects of one's own cause, the path of non-obstruction, are abandoned simultaneously, then it must be a simultaneous attainment, because if the fruition in which one abides is one in which the fifth level of desire realm afflictions are abandoned before the path of seeing, then it must be a prior attainment of detachment. If you accept this, then a stream-enterer abiding in the fruition of gradual attainment, the dharma, should be that, because it is that.

The reason is established because the forbearance of the path simultaneously abandons all the path-abandonments of the upper and lower realms. If it is asserted that the forbearance of the path abandons the path-abandonments of the desire realm, and the subsequent forbearance of the path abandons the path-abandonments of the upper realms, etc., as asserted in the Treasury of Knowledge, then the reason is not established. Well then, it follows that the worldly path, prior to the path of seeing, abandons the view-abandonments of everything below, because it is so stated in the Treasury of Knowledge. Furthermore, it follows that the stream-enterer who has abandoned the fifth affliction of the desire realm prior to the path of seeing is a fruit of transcendence, because it is preceded by detachment from desire. That scripture does not indicate a stream-enterer who is preceded by detachment from desire, because in establishing a stream-enterer, it only indicates that there is no difference between not having abandoned any afflictions of the desire realm and having abandoned the fifth affliction of the desire realm. Furthermore, some scholars say that for a person who has abandoned the sixth and ninth afflictions of the desire realm prior to the path of seeing and has attained the realization of the sixteen truths, it is appropriate to use the term "once-returner" because for most people, it is preceded by detachment from desire, and it is appropriate to use the term "non-returner" because it is preceded by detachment from desire for desire, but it is inappropriate to use the term "once-returner" and "non-returner" preceded by detachment from greed. This seems to be that the previous scholars, when explaining the scriptures, were preventing the convenient establishment of terminology, but in reality there is no other meaning. If that is the case, then for the gradual once-returner and non-returner, for most people, it is appropriate to use the term "once-returner" because it is detached from desire, and it is appropriate to use the term "non-returner" because it is detached from desire for desire, but the terms gradual once-returner and non-returner are inappropriate, these two are the same. Similarly, the logicians, in order to easily understand the first reason, created the term "pervasive property," so would they argue that it is appropriate to use the term "property of knowable dharma," but the term "pervasive property" is inappropriate? You who love to speak, think carefully about your own mind. Our own system is that detachment from greed is only established on the two intermediate fruits, because prior to the path of seeing, there are those who have abandoned the sixth and ninth afflictions of the desire realm, as well as the afflictions abandoned by seeing and existence.
