Because of the power, and because sound is not permanent. Odor cannot spread in the realm of form. If it is thought that since "exhaustion" is established in the first two birthplaces of the formless realm, why not establish it in the latter two birthplaces as well? To this, the wise say that because those two (referring to the first two formless realm birthplaces) are gathered in the mind and not obvious, they are not established. This is unreasonable, because it is only said that the mind of the peak of existence is not obvious, and for the first three formless realms, there is no difference in whether the mind is clear or not. What is it then? Establishing "exhaustion" requires that the main object of the self-realm has the aspect of infinity, and the first two formless realms have it, but the latter two do not. Fourth, exhaustion, expansion, pervasion, and all are different names. The object of focus, such as earth, expands and pervades all realms between exhaustion and exhaustion. Because of the meaning of pervading, it is called "exhaustion." The Ornament of Clear Realization says: Because it pervades without interruption, it is called the birthplace of exhaustion. The Sutra of the Prince says: Without interruption, it makes the exhausted earth and so on grow and pervade, therefore it is called the birthplaces of exhaustion and so on. So it is said. Fifth, there are four: the body's support, the mind's support, the object's support, and the way of applying the actual practice. First, the first eight have the support of the desire realm, because they are greatly increased by the power of hearing and thinking. The last two, according to the Compendium of Topics, have the support of the desire and form realms, and according to the Treasury of Knowledge, they have the support of the three realms, saying: The formless is called the support of the three realms, the rest are born from humans. Second, in the Compendium of Topics, it is said that everything relies on the actual practice of meditation. In the Treasury of Knowledge, it is said that the last two are the pure actual practice of the formless realm. Third, there are two types of object support: those that have been previously practiced and those that have not been previously practiced. The first is: rivers, forest fires, light moved by the wind, flowers such as blue, yellow, red, white, silver, and mandalas of the moon, etc., and walls hit by the light of the sun and moon, the inside of windows, and holes, etc., just seeing

Thus, the Samadhi of all that is exhausted from water to space will arise in order. Second, the object of exhaustion, earth, is not explained in the Abhisamayalankara. The order of the others is to fill a clean vessel such as a begging bowl with clean water, a square stove with firewood underneath, fire in the middle, and thick smoke on top, and wind from star holes, etc., from any branch direction where the wind touches, and round shapes made of blue, yellow, red, and white, separated by other colors, and holes about a span and four fingers high that open up the sky, and the light of a lamp inside a vase that hits the wall from the surface of the hole, etc. Fourth, a person who has attained the actual meditation focuses single-mindedly on these objects, and at the time of practice, he should first generate the intention that this object should pervade all knowable things. During the actual practice, he should focus only on the names "earth, earth, water, water" and meditate single-mindedly. Sixth, there are two types of signs: grasping signs and appearing signs. First, earth is not explained. The order of the others is: water has bubbles, and the appearance of water waves mixed with bubbles, fire has flames spreading and shaking like falling, milk boils and the steam rises as soon as it hits the ground, the four colors of blue, etc., have flower stamens and no trunks, and the last two become like holes in the wall, and even if they are increased, they do not increase, and they appear to have tops like a mandala made of earth. This is the meaning of the grasping sign, which is a sign of not having attained it. Second, earth is also not explained. The three, water, etc., appear to be like a jewel fan placed in the sky that does not move, and like a red, round moon dwelling in the sky, it dwells near and does not move, the four objects of blue, etc., rise in the sky and dwell like a jewel fan, and the last two appear to be like a dense collection of appearances that is very clear, so that everything is clear, and they become like a mandala of the sky, and after increasing, they become more numerous. This is the meaning of the appearing sign.
