Specifically, praise is mentioned first, and activities are mentioned at the end. Third, explaining the distinctions of qualities in detail, there are two explanations: the explanation of exhaustion and the explanation of subjugation. The first has seven aspects: essence, divisions, definite number, meaning of the term, manner of meditation, signs of accomplishment, and function. First, the definition of the samadhi of exhaustion: the samadhi that, relying on the self-cause dhyana, through which the appearance of the object that is established as exhaustion, is able to spread pervasively to all knowable objects of its own realm. If the definition of the sphere of exhaustion is established, then it must be established as the samadhi that is capable in that way, together with wisdom. As stated in the Compendium: "The samadhi that expands exhaustion, the wisdom that is truly attained, and the mind and mental factors that are in accordance with them are called the sphere of exhaustion." As stated in the Treasury of Knowledge, the first eight are mental factors that are not defiled, and the last two are said to have both mind and mental factors. Second, there are ten spheres of exhaustion: earth, water, fire, wind, blue, yellow, red, white, space, and consciousness. The order of the definitions is that, relying on the actual basis of the self-cause dhyana, the appearance of the object from earth to consciousness, the self-realm, is the samadhi that is able to spread pervasively to all knowable objects, together with wisdom, each applied separately. According to the Treasury of Knowledge, the first eight are said to be the nature of mental factors that are not defiled, and the latter two are added with relying on the actual basis of the formless realm as the self-cause. Third, if exhaustion is established for the four spheres of touch, form, dharma, and mind, why is it not established for the other eight spheres? Because touch and form both exist for oneself and others, and exist in all form realms, they are able to spread pervasively. And because there is no dependent arising, the dependent cannot arise and change, so the exhaustion of the four elements is established. Space pervades all, and consciousness is an object-possessor, so they are established for them. The other spheres are not like that, because the five senses cannot spread outward.
