If understood in this way, it is because it is said (in the scriptures) that (these qualities) are only compatible with Bodhisattvas. This is also the view in terms of appearance, such as the connecting word for the phrase "Forms and other aggregates are all emptiness" is "the incompatible side is," and the connecting word for the phrase "Giving and so on have no ego-grasping" is "the antidote is," and the connecting word for the phrase "Kings and so on have weak attachment" is "furthermore," and the connecting word for the phrase "Thus, understanding the principle of all-knowingness" is "if done in this way." Only these are said, but "the incompatible side" does not show the basic consciousness of the Lesser Vehicle, so it cannot be found in either the beginning or the end of the appearance. It can also be known through the power of the word "here." The abandonment and antidote mentioned in the first chapter are: the eight conceptualizations of grasping and being grasped that are abandoned by the path of seeing and the path of cultivation, and the eight collections of antidotes. The second chapter speaks of the nine to be abandoned by the path of cultivation and the nine paths of cultivation. The fourth chapter speaks of qualities and faults. The fifth chapter speaks of the conceptualizations that have become abandoned by the path of seeing and cultivation, and the peak combination of the path of seeing and cultivation. From these, the difference here is that the wisdom of grasping at characteristics and realizing no characteristics is said to be abandonment and antidote, and that is its meaning. Second, examine the difficult points that are currently faced. The manifestations of the three vehicles' paths differ in each of the four philosophical schools, so first they must be distinguished from the perspective of the philosophical schools. Among these four schools, the Vaibhashika school believes that when there is a nature that does not correspond to mental factors, that is, the lineage of the noble ones, one who is upright in conduct and possesses learning and contemplation will diligently practice. Based on discipline, when learning and contemplation are perfected, there are two ways of practicing, namely, practicing shamatha-vipashyana and practicing vipashyana. The first is: one who has excessive desire practices ugliness meditation, and one who has excessive conceptualization begins by practicing breathing in and out, thereby accomplishing shamatha-vipashyana. After shamatha-vipashyana is accomplished in this way, the second vipashyana is: practicing the four mindfulnesses, distinguishing the four objects such as the body into two aspects, namely, the self-characteristics such as the impurity of the body, and the general characteristic that everything is without self. Such four mindfulnesses, the sixteen impermanences and so on on top of the four truths,

If one cultivates completely, with small accumulations, cultivating in three lifetimes, one attains the enlightenment of a Hearer. With medium accumulations, cultivating for a hundred eons, one attains the enlightenment of a Solitary Realizer. With great accumulations, cultivating for three countless eons, it is held that one attains unsurpassed enlightenment. As it is said in the Treasury [Abhidharmakosha], "Quickly, the end of three existences," and "A Solitary Realizer, the cause of a hundred eons," and "That, for three countless ones, becomes a Buddha." Therefore, all three vehicles do not differ in view, because the five objects of knowledge are considered to be true, and therefore they are the same in not realizing those as unreal, and they are the same in realizing the sixteen aspects such as impermanence on top of the four truths. In this system, to realize the selflessness of persons, it is not necessary to realize the aggregates as unreal. The system of the Sutra School is mostly similar to the former, except that if one cultivates the view of realizing the sixteen aspects such as impermanence for the sake of liberating oneself alone from samsara, one attains the enlightenment of a Hearer. If one cultivates in a realm without Buddhas and Hearers for the sake of manifesting self-arisen enlightenment, one attains the enlightenment of a Solitary Conqueror. From familiarizing oneself with the objects and aspects of compassion in many lifetimes, the nature of mind transforms into the nature of compassion, and because one wishes to benefit beings, one is universally motivated, and if one cultivates for three countless eons, it is held that one attains unsurpassed enlightenment. As it is said in the Commentary on Valid Cognition [Pramanavarttika], "For the sake of destroying the suffering of sentient beings, the compassionate one engages in manifest effort in various methods," and "From familiarizing oneself with many methods in various ways for a long time, faults and qualities become very clear." Therefore, the three vehicles also do not differ in view, because they are the same in realizing the selflessness of persons, the basis of the unconditioned, and non-associated compositional factors as unreal, and because the other three bases are considered to be true, they are the same in not realizing them as unreal. There is a difference in the way of realizing the view, because Hearers and Solitary Realizers have less familiarity with the view and are separated from the help of special conduct, therefore they are unable to abandon the imprints of afflictions, and therefore they have not attained the ultimate completion of clear understanding of the nature of the four truths, while the fully enlightened Buddha is different from that.
