I also request you to fully inform the Blessed One of the meaning of what was also declared as "completely passing into complete extinction." Thus it was said. The second part has three aspects: the way it is explained in the Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra; the way it is explained in the Mahāyānasaṃgraha; and the way it is explained in the Abhidharmasamuccaya. The first part is: explaining the meaning of what is said to be without inherent existence, and explaining the meaning of what is said to be unborn, etc., in two parts. The first part is: In the Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra, the truly noble ones, considering the three aspects of the absence of inherent existence of all phenomena, namely, the absence of inherent characteristics, the absence of inherent origination, and the absence of inherent ultimate reality, taught that all phenomena are without inherent existence. Thus, considering the three absences of inherent existence, it is said to be without inherent existence. So, what are these three absences of inherent existence? How is it that there is no inherent existence? The first absence of inherent existence is: In the Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra, what is the absence of inherent characteristics of all phenomena? It is the characteristic of what is completely imputed. Why is that? Because it is a characteristic that is established by name and convention, but it does not exist by its own characteristic, therefore it is called the absence of inherent characteristics. Thus, considering what is completely imputed, it is established as the absence of inherent characteristics, because it is not established by its own characteristic. The second point is: In the Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra, what is the absence of inherent origination of all phenomena? It is the characteristic of the dependent nature of all phenomena. Why is that? Because it arises from the power of other conditions, not by itself, therefore it is called the absence of inherent origination. Thus it is said. The dependent nature is the absence of inherent origination, because inherent origination must be established as arising by itself without depending on other conditions, but the dependent nature arises from the power of other conditions. Regarding the way of establishing the third absence of inherent existence, there are two ways, one of which is to place it on the dependent nature: In the Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra, what is the ultimate absence of inherent existence of all phenomena? It is dependent arising, whatever phenomena are without inherent existence by the absence of inherent origination, those are the ultimate

The absence of inherent existence is also the absence of inherent existence. Why is that? Because for the true, correct, and excellent dharmas, whatever is a pure object is completely revealed as being true, and the nature of other-powered is not a pure object, therefore it is called the true absence of inherent existence. Thus it is said. Also, when established on the perfectly established, it is said in the Explanation of Intention Sutra that, moreover, whatever is the nature of the perfectly established of all dharmas is also called the true absence of inherent existence. Why is that? Because for the true, correct, and excellent dharmas, whatever is selflessness is called their absence of inherent existence, that is true, and the true is distinguished by the absence of inherent existence of all dharmas, therefore it itself is called the true absence of inherent existence. Thus it is said. The meaning of these is that when the true is established on the pure object, then the true absence of inherent existence is established on the other-powered, because the other-powered is not a pure object. That dharma is true, and that dharma is also without inherent existence, when the true absence of inherent existence is established, it is established on the perfectly established, because the perfectly established is the truth of the other-powered, and also the absence of inherent existence of the other-powered. Thus it is said. Second, if the way of saying absence of inherent existence is like that, then what is considered when saying unborn etc.? This is said considering the first and last absence of inherent existence. In the Explanation of Intention Sutra it is said: For it, considering the absence of inherent existence of characteristics, I said that all dharmas are unborn and unceasing, from the beginning they are peaceful, and by nature they are completely nirvana. Thus it is shown. Why is that? Because for the true, correct, and excellent, like this, whatever is without its own nature, that is unborn. Whatever is unborn, that is unceasing etc. Also, considering that the true absence of inherent existence is distinguished by the selflessness of phenomena, I said that all dharmas are unborn and unceasing, from the beginning they are peaceful, and by nature they are completely nirvana. Thus it is shown. Why is that? Because like this, the true absence of inherent existence is the selflessness of phenomena.
