These two are not contradictory, because here, things are also non-dual. As the Madhyāntavibhāga states: "The absence of two natures is the absence of nature, the characteristic of the emptiness of things." Also, the Abhidharmasamuccaya speaks of eight unconditioned things. The noble Nāgārjuna, from the perspective of the perfected nature in the Mind-Only school, said: "The true substance is real and permanent." Therefore, the absence of a common basis between the unconditioned and things is only the view of the Sautrāntika school. The Vaibhāṣika and Mind-Only schools hold that these two have a common basis, as stated by the venerable Drakpa Gyaltsen, and this seems to be the key point of the scriptures. Secondly, from the perspective stated in the Compendium, the way to abandon exaggeration and denigration is explained. Therefore, there are two accomplishments on the Middle Way. The first is, in the Compendium: "Because Mahayana practitioners each misunderstand, they say: 'In conventional truth, everything exists; in ultimate truth, everything does not exist.'" They say this. To this, one should say: "Venerable one, what is ultimate truth? What is conventional truth?" If they answer: "The selflessness of all dharmas is ultimate truth, and the grasping of self in those selfless dharmas is conventional truth." Why? Because it is the basis for conventionally making, imputing, expressing, and naming things that do not exist. If they answer in this way, this is the prior definition of the two truths for those who assert selflessness. The refutation of the definition of conventional truth is in the Compendium: To this, one should say: "Is the grasping of self considered to arise from speech and the cause of convention, or is it merely speech and convention?" If it is considered to arise from speech and the cause of convention, then, since it arises from speech and the cause of convention, it cannot be said to be non-existent. If it is merely speech and convention, then it is groundlessly expressed and conventional.

It should not be said like that." The Blessed One said so. Its meaning is that the conventional truth that is apprehended with the thought "it exists" on something that is without inherent existence, if it arises from the cause of the internal expression of conceptual thought, and if the conventional truth arises from its own similar previous conventional truth, then it contradicts the absence of ultimate truth. If it is merely imputed by the internal expression of conceptual thought, and if it is merely a conventional truth that does not arise from the cause of its own similar previous conventional truth, then since the basis of imputation is absent in ultimate truth, even imputation is not reasonable. To prevent the establishment of ultimate truth, it is said in the Compendium: "To that, one should say, 'O venerable one, why is that which is apprehended non-existent?'" When asked in this way, if the answer is, "Because it is a reversed object," then one should say, "Is that reversed object considered to exist or not to exist? If it exists, then it is not permissible to say that the absence of inherent existence of all phenomena is the ultimate truth. If it does not exist, then because it is a reversed object, it is not permissible to say that what is apprehended is without inherent existence." The Blessed One said so. Its meaning is that if one asks, "What is the reason why what is apprehended is without inherent existence?" and one answers, "Because the apprehending mind is a reversed object," then one asks, "Then, does the reversed mind inherently exist or not? If it is the former, then it contradicts the absence of inherent existence of all phenomena. If it is the latter, then one cannot establish that what is apprehended is without inherent existence by using the reversed object as a reason." Secondly, it is said in the Compendium: "In that case, whatever clings to the nature of dependence and the perfectly established nature as the nature of the completely imputed, that should be known as the nature of superimposition. It is unreasonable for the nature of dependence and the nature of perfect establishment to exist." That is, whatever is a slander against one's own characteristic. In this way, by abandoning the two extremes, one should understand the way of the meaning of just that. It is said that superimposing the dependent arising and the perfectly established as the imputation of the completely imputed, and slandering the dependent arising and the perfectly established as being without inherent existence.
