Because of non-existence, it is completely separated, and it only exists completely in the time of permanence and the time of steadfastness. That is the Dharma nature of all dharmas, unconditioned, and free from all defilements. So it is said. Secondly, from the way it is said in the Ornament of the Sutras, explaining the meaning of what is said to be without self-nature, and explaining the meaning of what is said to be unborn, etc., there are two parts. First, because all dharmas depend on conditions and lack autonomy, they are without self-nature. Any dharma that ceases does not arise again as the nature of that dharma, so because it does not have its own nature, it is without self-nature. What is born but not ceased is momentary, because its own nature does not exist in the second moment, so it is without self-nature. Just as children grasp at purity, happiness, permanence, self, etc., because those do not exist, it is said to be without self-nature. As it is said in the Ornament: Because there is no self and self-nature, it does not abide in its own nature, because it does not dwell and grasp, because there is nothing, it is said to be without self-nature. Because it is said so. Second, how is it without self-nature, so it is unborn. How is it unborn, so it is unceasing, etc., using the former as the reason to establish the latter. As it is said in the Ornament: Because the former is the basis of the latter, because of no self-nature, it establishes unborn, unceasing, originally peaceful, and self-nature Nirvana. So it is said. Third, the way it is explained from the Compendium of Topics is that in the Compendium itself it says: On the self-nature of what is completely imputed, there is characteristic no self-nature; on the dependent arising, there is arising no self-nature; on the perfectly established, there is ultimate no self-nature. What is the intention of the appearance of unborn, unceasing, originally peaceful, self-nature completely pacified, etc.? How is it without self-nature, so it is unborn. How is it unborn, so it is unceasing. How is it unborn and unceasing, so it is originally peaceful. So self-nature is completely pacified. Etc., it is said that unborn, etc., are explained from the perspective of all three characteristics. If you think that it contradicts what is said in the Explanation of the Profound Meaning Sutra, which speaks of no self-nature from the perspective of the beginning and the end, then there is no fault. Because in the Explanation of the Profound Meaning Sutra, both the beginning and the end.

Since it is not a conditioned phenomenon, it is said to be unborn, unceasing, and so on. In the Ornament and the Compendium, due to the power of the words "how" and "thus," dependent origination also lacks the nature of self-generation, so it is said not to be self-generated, and therefore not self-ceasing, and so on. Third, therefore, to distinguish the specific differences of the three turnings of the wheel: In the Samdhinirmocana Sutra, it is said: "The Blessed One first, in Varanasi, in the Deer Park of the Rishi's Fall, for those who have entered the Hearer Vehicle, truly showed the aspects of the Four Noble Truths, and turned the wheel of Dharma, which was wonderful and amazing, and which had never been turned in the world in accordance with the Dharma by anyone, whether god or human. The wheel of Dharma turned by the Blessed One is superior, has stages, is of guiding meaning, and is the basis of debate. The Blessed One, starting from the non-existence of the nature of phenomena, that is, from the unborn, the unceasing, the primordially peaceful, and the naturally completely liberated, for those who have entered the Great Vehicle, in the form of proclaiming emptiness, turned the second wheel of Dharma, which was extremely wonderful and amazing. The wheel of Dharma turned by the Blessed One is superior, has stages, is of guiding meaning, and is the basis of debate. The Blessed One, starting from the non-existence of the nature of phenomena, that is, from the unborn, the unceasing, the primordially peaceful, and the naturally completely liberated, for those who have entered all vehicles, in the form of well-distinguishing, turned the third wheel of Dharma, which was inconceivable and wonderful. The wheel of Dharma turned by the Blessed One is unsurpassed, has no stages, is of definitive meaning, and is not the basis of debate." Thus it is said. Regarding these meanings, how the Madhyamaka and Cittamatra schools establish the difference between the definitive and provisional meanings of the three turnings of the wheel, and the difference in the recognition of the later wheels, should be distinguished in detail, but I fear it is too much.
