Thus it is said. The second bhumi has thousands of merits, the third has hundreds of thousands, the fourth has millions, the fifth has tens of millions, the sixth has hundreds of millions, the seventh has trillions of millions, the eighth has the number of dust particles in ten hundred thousand three-thousand-fold worlds, the ninth has the number of dust particles in ten hundred thousand immeasurable Buddha-fields, and the tenth obtains the number of dust particles in ten hundred thousand trillion hundred thousand inexpressible Buddha-fields. The meaning of these is explained in nine verses in the Madhyamakavatara, such as, "At that time, this one sees a hundred Buddhas." Twelfth, after obtaining the wisdom of directly realizing selflessness, until one cannot consciously abide in the subtle aspects of falling errors, before that is the first bhumi, and when one can do it, it is the second. Then, until one cannot equally enter all worldly samadhis and cannot retain all the meanings of what is heard, before that is the second, and when one can, it is the third. Then, until one cannot repeatedly abide in the dharmas of the aspects of enlightenment, and craves samadhi and craves dharma, and cannot especially abandon the mind from craving dharma and abide in equanimity, before that is the third, and when one can, it is the fourth. Then, until when meditating on the four truths, one has a biased mind towards samsara and nirvana, and a biased mind appears, and one cannot turn this mind away and meditate on the aspects of enlightenment supported by skillful means, before that is the fourth, and when one can, it is the fifth. Then, until one is weary of samsara and cannot abide in the signless, before that is the fifth, and when one can, it is the sixth. Then, until one cannot abide in the signless in all situations, before that is the sixth, and when one can, it is the seventh. Then, until one cannot spontaneously accomplish abiding in the signless, before that is the seventh, and when one can, it is the eighth. Then, until one is not empowered to teach the Dharma with the fourfold perfect knowledge, before that is the eighth, and when one is empowered, it is the ninth. After that is the Dharmakaya.

Until one has attained complete merit and is unable to correctly recognize, it is the ninth bhumi. If one is able, then it is the tenth bhumi. After that, even if one has received empowerments such as the Nirmāṇakāya, if one is unable to generate wisdom that is without attachment and obstruction to all knowable things, then until that time it is the tenth bhumi, and if one is able to generate it, then that is the Buddha-bhumi. This is the meaning spoken of in the sutra of the Explanation of the Thought. In the Sutra Requested by Inexhaustible Intelligence, it says: In the first bhumi, one dreams of the realm of the three-thousand great-thousand world system being completely filled with billions of treasures. In the second, one dreams of the three-thousand being as smooth as the palm of one's hand, and well-adorned with billions of jewels. In the third, one dreams of oneself being brave and wearing armor, subduing all external enemies. In the fourth, one dreams of four wind mandalas blowing from the four directions, and on a great mandala endowed with all, various flowers being manifestly scattered. In the fifth, one dreams of a garland of champaka flowers being placed on the head of a woman adorned with all ornaments. In the sixth, one dreams of a pond with four steps, spread with golden sand, without turbidity and clear, filled with water endowed with eight qualities, and adorned with utpala flowers, kumuda lilies, and white lotuses, and one sees oneself enjoying pleasure in it. In the seventh, one dreams of seeing the precipices of the hells of beings on both the left and right sides, and one sees oneself returning from them unharmed and undamaged. In the eighth, one dreams of the king of beasts, the lion with a mane, wearing a crest, causing all small predators to be afraid, sitting on both shoulders. In the ninth, one dreams of a wheel-turning king, surrounded by billions of people, with people looking ahead and holding an umbrella adorned with various jewels on his head. In the tenth, one dreams of the body of the Tathagata, the color of his body like gold, the light a fathom, surrounded by billions of Brahma, with people looking ahead and the Buddha teaching the Dharma. Similarly, in the Ratnakuta and the Suvarṇaprabhāsa, there are many dream signs for the ten bhumis.
