It is said that when one is proficient in the five realms of Buddhas, etc., it is a liberation part taught from the stage of complete perfection, and when one single-mindedly meditates on its meaning, warmth is attained when clarity arises from the grasping of all afflictions as being without inherent existence; the peak is attained when clarity arises from the grasping of purity as being without inherent existence; forbearance is attained when clarity arises from the grasping of the person as substantially existent as being without inherent existence; and the highest dharma is established when clarity arises from the grasping of the person as imputedly existent as being without inherent existence. Regarding the meaning of these, there are three aspects: how it is explained in the sutras, how it is summarized in the treatises, and a detailed explanation of the distinctive dharmas. First, after the completion of the instruction sutra, the object and aspect of the small warmth are taught, followed by the distinction of causes, then from the object and aspect of the medium warmth to the object and aspect of the great highest dharma, then the four discriminations, and then the complete retention is taught. Secondly, there are two aspects: a brief explanation of how the meaning of the sutra is taught as a path of joining that surpasses the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, and a separate explanation of each characteristic according to the order of the sutra. First, "object and aspect," etc., are two verses. Regarding this, there are three aspects: what dharma distinguishes it, what is the basis to be distinguished, and what realm it surpasses. First, "object and aspect, cause and complete retention." That is to say, the path of joining of the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas is merely to focus on the four truths, while this (referring to the path of joining mentioned here) also focuses on impermanence, etc., on top of the four truths; the path of joining of the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas is characterized by manifest clinging to impermanence, etc., while this is characterized by preventing manifest clinging; the path of joining of the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas is merely the cause of realization of one or two vehicles, while this is the cause of realization of all three vehicles; the path of joining of the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas falls into the Hinayana because it is separated from the two complete retentions of inner and outer, while this does not fall into the Hinayana because of the two complete retentions of inner and outer, but is completely retained in the Mahayana, thus surpassing with four characteristics. Here, having the four discriminations is counted among the characteristics, making it five.

This is not the fundamental intention. Because the sutra clearly states that there is conceptualization before the total retention, but here, conceptualization is placed after the total retention, which contradicts the addition of the instrumental particle "by" to everything above the total retention. Therefore, the statement in the sutra that total retention is before conceptualization is for the convenience of arranging verses; and the statement in the extensive commentary that it is the opposite is to understand that conceptualization is a characteristic of the path of joining, which I do not think is reasonable. The extensive commentary follows the order of the sutra, and the enumeration of conceptualization as a category of characteristics in the sutra is to let people know that conceptualization is not a noble dharma that surpasses the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. So, what is the meaning of the sutra saying "conceptualization is before total retention"? It is to let people know that it belongs to the category of characteristics. Here, it is also the intention of the Ornament for Clear Realization. Because the treatise says, "If someone asks, what is the difference to be said about these?", the answer is, "It should be said that Bodhisattvas surpass the Shravakas and others by four differences, namely the difference of object, the difference of aspect, the difference of cause, and the difference of total retention." Therefore. So, if someone asks, how should we understand that the conceptualizations of grasping and apprehending, which will be explained at the end of the same scripture, and the four conceptualizations to be abandoned by the paths of seeing and meditation, are also said to be in complete accordance with these conceptualizations? If someone asks, are the subjects of the sutras and treatises that explain the path of joining also necessarily limited to these four characteristics? My point is that not only these, but conceptualization is also the subject to be explained. Otherwise, why not say "Bodhisattvas are explained by five differences"? I think that the root of the Acharya's mistake in enumerating conceptualization as a characteristic also lies in this. So, regarding "the object is the three aspects, the cause" after that, the Ornament for Clear Realization says, "For the time being, from the perspective of all-knowingness, those that Bodhisattvas have that are in accordance with the decisive part surpass those that Shravakas and others have that are in accordance with the decisive part by six differences." Is this contradictory? Know that it refers to the different differences between the paths of joining before and after.
