This is the way of explaining it. The first is the Prajñāpāramitā sutras. On this, the wise men of the past made the arrangement of six mothers and eleven sons. The six mothers are: the Hundred Thousand Verses, the Twenty-five Thousand Verses, and the Eight Thousand Verses, these are the three sections of extensive explanation. The Ten Thousand Verses of Wisdom, the Eight Thousand Verses, and the Collection of Precious Qualities, these are the three sections of condensed explanation. The eleven sons are: the Seven Hundred Verses of Wisdom, the Three Hundred Verses of Wisdom, the One Hundred and Fifty Verses of Wisdom, the Fifty Verses of Wisdom, the Twenty-five Doors, the One Asked by Powerful Subduer, the One Asked by Kausika, the Few Letters, the One Letter, the Diamond Cutter, and the Heart of Wisdom. Among these, the first six explain the eight topics and seventy meanings separately, so they are mothers. The latter eleven do not explain in this way, so they are said to be sons. On this, there are two things that are not reasonable: the fixed number and the terminology. The first is that one chapter of the Eight Thousand Verse Sutra Collection becomes excessive if it is counted separately. Moreover, the Sutra Asked by Moon Essence, the Sutra Asked by Sun Essence, and the Prajñāpāramitā in the Hand of Vajra are not complete, so there is the fault of omission. The second is that the terminology is not reasonable. The terminology of mother for those who explain by separating the eight topics and seventy meanings, and the terminology of son for those who do not explain in this way, is not mentioned anywhere. Also, some say that it is called mother because it shows the stages of realization, and it is called son because it does not show the stages of realization but only shows the unborn realm. This is also not reasonable, because the Hundred Thousand Verses of Wisdom and so on show both, so there is the fault of being both mother and son. Moreover, showing the unborn realm means showing the selflessness as the main thing to be expressed, so the terminology of mother is reasonable. Furthermore, the Seven Hundred Verses of Wisdom show the two accumulations and joining, and the ten grounds of the noble ones, that is, the arrangement of the twelve grounds. The Diamond Cutter shows the ground of aspiration and conduct, the ground of the bodhisattva, and the ground of the Buddha, that is, the arrangement of the three grounds. The Heart of Wisdom shows the arrangement of the five paths. So, what is the sutra to be explained? All the Prajñāpāramitā sutras are the selflessness that has become the mother of the four noble ones.

Now, since it elucidates the wisdom of realization as the main subject, the term "Mother" is appropriate, so this is the sutra to be discussed here. Secondly, some ancient ones considered the Ornament for Clear Realization, composed by Maitreya, the Collection of Reasoning of the Middle Way, composed by Nagarjuna, the Commentary on the Hundred Thousand Verses, composed by Vira, and the Condensed Meaning of the Eight Thousand Verses, composed by Vasubandhu, as the four definitive openers of the chariots of interpretation of the Perfection of Wisdom. So, how did they open these traditions? The first elucidated the stages of hidden meaning and clear realization, the second elucidated the view of emptiness that is directly shown, and the third elucidated the meaning of the Mother through three categories and eleven aspects. The three categories are: first, distinguishing the occasion of the land and basis, for disciples with sharp faculties, Shariputra, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, desiring to fully awaken to all dharmas in all aspects, should train in the Mother. Through the four ways of "by whom," "for what," and "how to train," all meanings are encompassed and taught, which is the gate of condensed teaching. Then, up to the first chapter is the gate of intermediate teaching. Then, the complete teaching at the end is the gate of extensive explanation, these are the three categories. The eleven aspects are: first, speaking to Shariputra, then, the explanation by Subhuti is one, then, speaking to Indra is two, speaking to Subhuti is four, speaking to Maitreya is two, and speaking to Ananda and entrusting it completely, these are eleven. The fourth summarizes the main meaning of the Mother into thirty-two points and teaches them. The Condensed Meaning of the Eight Thousand Verses says: "The basis and what should be done, as well as the activity and the inclusion of meditation, the classification, the signs and the downfalls, and the benefits should all be truly stated." Among these, the basis is the teacher Buddha, what should be done is the retinue, the activity is how to practice the Mother through the ten dharmas, the meditation is the ten meditations as antidotes to the ten distractions of discursive thoughts, the classification is the sixteen emptinesses, the signs are the signs of demonic activity and the two signs of non-retrogression, the downfall is that abandoning the Perfection of Wisdom leads to falling into the lower realms, and the benefit is that the merit of practicing the Mother is greater than giving offerings filled with jewels from three thousand worlds, and so on. This is what they believe. Knowing all knowable things.

The venerable one said that the latter two are not different founders from the former two, so the founders must be the former two. This is also true in meaning. In general, merely explaining the intention of the Mother is not enough to become the founder of a vehicle. Rather, it is by relying on the oral instructions of others, not explaining in a general way, but by directly seeing the truth of the ultimate reality of Dharma, and thus freely explaining the intention of the Buddha's words, that one is considered the founder of a vehicle. Therefore, the former two are certain, while the latter two are merely relying on the oral instructions of others and explaining in a general way. If merely because the methods of explanation are different, they are considered different founders, then the Root Wisdom and the Introduction will also become different founders. The former explains through the door of dependent origination, which is free from the eight extremes of elaboration, while the latter explains by combining it with the explanation from the Sutra of the Ten Bhumis. Then, on whose oral instructions do the latter two rely? The teacher Dignāga (ཕྱོགས་གླང་།) heard the oral instructions from Maitreya (བྱམས་པ།) through Asaṅga (ཐོགས་མེད།), and also heard from Vasubandhu (དབྱིག་གཉེན།). The teacher Hero (དཔའ་བོ།) heard the oral instructions of Nāgārjuna (ཀླུ་སྒྲུབ།) from Āryadeva (འཕགས་པ་ལྷ།), so they followed these people. The third question is, if it is certain that there are two founders, then how did they found them? In general, the Perfection of Wisdom Sutra has shown the paths of all three vehicles. It is extensively taught in the sutra that those who wish to study the Hearer's Ground should also study the Perfection of Wisdom. Finally, it says, why is this? Because the Perfection of Wisdom extensively shows the three vehicles. Therefore, in the offering and praise section of the Ornament of Clear Realization, it is considered to be in accordance with the topic, showing the paths of all three vehicles, and therefore praising the qualities of the three knowledges. In the body section, only the stages of the Great Vehicle are shown, because it says "not experienced by others," and the stages of the eight and six clear realizations are not found in other vehicles. If considered from the perspective of the types of realization, the body section also shows the paths of all three vehicles, so the intention of the words of both Holy Lion and Lion of Liberation is that all clear realizations are included.
