The three obscurations eliminated by purity are: the afflictive obscuration belonging to the category of what is to be abandoned by the Hearers; the cognitive obscuration of apprehended phenomena belonging to the category of what is to be abandoned by the Solitary Realizers; and the earlier part of the path of seeing and the path of meditation belonging to the category of what is to be abandoned by the Great Vehicle. It does not eliminate the later part of the path of meditation. The purity of the Buddhas eliminates that, because it is extremely separate. The purity of the Bodhisattvas does not eliminate the cognitive obscuration of the path of meditation belonging to the category of what is to be abandoned by the Bodhisattvas. What is the reason why the purity of the Buddhas eliminates that? Because the former does not eliminate it. Because there are nine paths from the path of seeing and the path of liberation of the Bodhisattvas to the path of liberation of the ninth ground, the former does not eliminate even a little of the cognitive obscuration of the path of meditation belonging to the category of what is to be abandoned by the Bodhisattvas. The latter does not eliminate the smallest of the small cognitive obscuration of the path of meditation. The purity of the Buddhas eliminates that, because the nine unobstructed paths of the Great Vehicle's path of meditation are able to be the actual antidote to the nine cognitive obscurations of the path of meditation of the three realms. The purity of the Buddhas occurs after all of that is complete. As it is said: The nine grounds are great, etc. If it is the purity of the Bodhisattvas, then the reason why it is pervaded by the purification of the three obscurations of the three vehicles is that the minimum of the purity of the Bodhisattvas is recognized from the path of seeing and the path of liberation, and it has already eliminated all four aspects of the apprehended phenomena of the path of seeing. The way in which the categories of what is to be abandoned by the three vehicles are included within that has already been explained. The elimination of the earlier part of the path of meditation of the later pure paths of meditation is also included in the elimination of what is to be abandoned by the Great Vehicle's path, so there is no need to mention it separately. Here, there are three aspects: the recognition of the obscuration to be abandoned, the recognition of the antidote that eliminates it, and the way in which the abandoned and the antidote are combined. The first is: The nine grounds are great, etc. Great, etc. are impurities. The nine grounds are the nine grounds of the three realms from the desire realm to the peak of existence. The Manifest Cognition says: That is, the nine grounds included in the desire realm, the form realm, and the formless realm, etc. The Small Commentary says: The desire realm, concentration, and form

Therefore, as it is said in the scriptures, "For the realm of non-existence, that is the nine grounds." Each ground is further divided into nine types, such as the greatest of the great, etc., of meditative abandonment, thus there are eighty-one. This is the definite number of what is to be abandoned here. As it is said in the Ornament for Clear Realization, "For the nine grounds, each has great among the great, etc., of distinctions." If someone asks: Then isn't it contradictory to say there are nine types? Answer: Considering each ground individually, it is not contradictory. If someone asks: Isn't it contradictory that the fifth chapter says there are four or thirty-six types of meditative abandonment? Answer: That has the same meaning as this. Because the thirty-six types of grasping and clinging distinctions included in the desire realm, each is established here as the greatest of the great, etc., of the nine meditative abandonments included in the desire realm, and the same applies up to the peak of existence. Second is: "The smallest of antidotes, etc., is the path of purification." That is, the nine uninterrupted paths from the second to the tenth grounds. Third, the nine meditative abandonments of the three realms and nine grounds are sequentially abandoned by the nine meditative paths; or the nine meditative abandonments of each ground are sequentially abandoned by the nine meditative paths, and it will not exceed these two situations. Because the scriptures clearly state that the nine meditative abandonments of the three realms and nine grounds, such as the greatest of the great, etc., are sequentially abandoned by the nine meditative paths, such as the smallest of the small, etc., so there is nothing else to do besides these two situations. Among these two methods, the former is unreasonable. Because in that case, the meditative abandonment of the desire realm would have to be established as the greatest of the great, and the meditative abandonment of the peak of existence would have to be established as the smallest of the small, but no scripture has ever said this. Moreover, each ground has the same nine types, such as the greatest of the great, etc., so it is also unreasonable in terms of logic. Therefore, there is no choice but the latter method. So there are eighty-one meditative abandonments of the nine grounds. Therefore, the Mahayana meditative path also becomes eighty-one from the opposite perspective, but from the perspective of substance, it is summarized into nine types. That is, the uninterrupted path of the second ground, from the greatest of the great meditative abandonment included in the desire realm, to the greatest of the great meditative abandonment included in the peak of existence, simultaneously abandons nine types. And so on, the uninterrupted path of the tenth ground abandons the smallest of the small obscuration of knowledge of the meditative abandonment of the desire realm.
