Because it has already been explained that the mind that desires to take birth in samsara is to be abandoned. Fifth, who abandons it? Those of the Hearer and Solitary Realizer lineages abandon it, because they seek only the peace of liberation from samsara. Sixth, then, if the Hearer Arhat has already abandoned such craving, will there be no cause to take birth in samsara when practicing the Mahayana path? This is a very difficult point, and it seems that a definitive explanation of this view is needed. If someone requests an explanation, then the Mind-Only school believes that craving is pervaded by afflictions, so when Hearer and Solitary Realizer Arhats practice the Mahayana path, they accomplish a manifestation body based on meditation, and abide in that body for countless eons, thereby attaining perfect enlightenment. As it says in the Ornament: "Without effort, that Buddha, Born without seeking manifestation, Meditative effort, relying on that, Will attain supreme enlightenment." The Middle Way school believes that although Hearer and Solitary Realizer Arhats have abandoned afflictive craving, there is still non-afflictive craving. When they generate the supreme mind of enlightenment, that craving becomes an affliction associated with virtue, and they take birth by its power. As it says in the Engaging in Bodhisattva Deeds: "To understand how to rise from the remainderless nirvana and take birth in samsara, even though this craving is not afflictive, why does it not exist like ignorance? Craving is influenced by feeling, and feeling also exists in them." In short, Hearer and Solitary Realizer practitioners intentionally seek and abandon the craving in their own continuum that desires to take birth in samsara, while noble Bodhisattvas intentionally seek and do not abandon the mind in their own continuum that desires to take birth in samsara. This is the difference between prioritizing one's own benefit and prioritizing the benefit of others, so this should also be applied here. Seventh, in the Jewel Heap Sutra: "Just as the impure excrement of city dwellers is beneficial to sugarcane fields, the afflictive excrement of Bodhisattvas is beneficial for generating the Buddha's teachings." Also, the sutra says:

When abiding on the great earth, afflictions become limbs of enlightenment, and samsara is also of a peaceful nature, therefore the activities of the spiritual heirs of the Buddhas are inconceivable. Regarding this, the sutra says: Just as the results of the paths of the Hearers and so forth, and the realizations of the paths are each definite, so it is not the case that the path of a Bodhisattva is known in this way, because it is not the case that afflictions are abandoned in all respects. Regarding the purification of the eighth ground, the sutra says: Just as sentient beings become ripened, so one deliberately contemplates and completely takes hold of the body. The treatise on its meaning says: "Deliberately taking rebirth." Its commentary says: "Seeing the benefit of all sentient beings, taking rebirth with wisdom as the guide is called..." "Destroying all latent predispositions." The commentary on this in the *Ornament of Clear Realization* says: "The latent predispositions that are completely absent in every way are the latent predispositions gathered by ignorance and the outflows of views, but since Bodhisattvas deliberately take rebirth, they are not gathered by the outflows of desire and existence." In the *Sutra Requested by Sagaramati*, the Bhagavan said: "What is the affliction that acts as the cause of samsara and is in accordance with the root of virtue? It is like this: not being satisfied with completely seeking the accumulation of merit, completely taking rebirth deliberately, wishing to meet the Buddhas, not being weary of causing sentient beings to be completely ripened, being diligent in completely upholding the sacred Dharma, being delighted in thinking about what actions there are to benefit sentient beings, not abandoning the latent predispositions of desiring the Dharma, and not abandoning completely engaging in the perfections. Sagaramati, those that cause Bodhisattvas to be completely joined in the three realms, but are not tainted by the faults of afflictions, the afflictions that are in accordance with the root of virtue are these. Bhagavan, when is it a root of virtue? For what reason is it called an affliction? The Bhagavan said: Sagaramati, in this way, these afflictions of such a nature cause Bodhisattvas to be completely joined in the three realms, and the three realms are also from afflictions.
